Description
being made in Cinema 4D R11 AR3 . this model is based on the Arc Generator in the recent Iron Man movies and it's likeness is Copyrighted to Marvel Studios [link] . the metal textures on the chest plates (Step 3 and after) are from images by ~wojtar-stockto do :
- make each material more realistic
- finish molding armor
- inset bolts into armor
done :
- flatten rings
- reshape center ring
- reshape center ring arms
- remake the wires between the blocks
- add solder blobs on the copper block wires
- turn each screw slightly different
- make a new material for the screws
- add plastic ring through the copper blocks
the final render will be 1920 x 1080
i would really like to hear any opinions you have . i want to spend the time to make this model and render look amazing

my god this is epic! The texturing is brilliant, though i think steve made a fair comment on shiny wiring.
the detail is brilliant...simply fantastic.

thanks mate . i will be working on the wires soon . the inside red and blue wires need to be larger . that'll be easy to change .. but i'm actually considering drawing 10 new copper wraps , each drawn separately . they are a bit too straight and perfect . also i think 2 layers of wires would make it look a lot more authentic

hmmm....i think one way of a bit of randomness would be to use mograph and the random effector. but that would onyl work by bumping up the number of copies to a huge level to give the impression of a seamless wire.

i copied that wire block to an empty project and closed the main file . i made we wire spines wrapping around a block twice . when placed into the array i got the out of memory error . so updating the wires on those blocks is not possible . mograph is entirely out of the question for me

okay.
my idea of mograph, if i may explain just for the sake of it, would be to set up a spline, place a small sphere into mograph and add so many copies that it appears to be a solid wire, then add a ranom effector (might need to mess with settings to get it to work right with a spline effector) and thus- randomized splines.
oh, and you can click 'crate instances' to speed up rendering.

but wouldn't that take a lot more resources than just using spines ?

Waitin for the final so i can fave it
And just a small crit.. Id turn op the reflection a bit for the wires...

which wires ? there are sets of blue and red wires under the dark ring with holes , copper wires wrapped around blocks , and wires between those blocks

i used 2 white Lights for the general scene . one has Soft Shadow and the other has Area Shadow . there are 4 blue lights in the center - one on the outside , one just behind the center ring , one behind that and one even deeper behind that . since this render i have turned off the 2 deepest-inside blue lights . because they are simply unnecessary and cause the overall light buildup to be too white
my blue light RGB is 41.96.164 and all blue lights are set to 400% Intensity , Visible Light was set to Volumetric but i changed that to Visible (that reduced my render time a lot) . the center/outer blue light has a Soft Shadow .
for the 10 light circle i put one blue Light into an Array object and set the Copies to 9 (makes 10 total) . after i setup the Array i right-clicked it and chose "Current State To Object . that created a Null Object with 10 Lights in it . doing this reduced my render a lot . the render engine doesn't like calculating Lights in an Array . it's easier for it to plot 10 individual Lights than to resolve additional Array data for each Light . it has to calculate the Lights anyway and the Array just adds to the time it has to work
i had the blue Light's Noise set to Wavy Turbulence - i really liked that effect but my poor computer would've taken a whole day to render it so i regrettably turned off Noise . oh and all of the blue Lights have the "No Illumination" option activated so they don't actually give off light to the scene and change the brightness or color of everything
i hope some of that helps

This looks really good. At first I thought I remembered the inner ring being silver colored, but after checking some references, I find my memory sucks! I don't know what you are using for reference, but here is a link to what I found. Yours looks pretty true to this.

The only modeling error I see is the strips that support the inner silver ring are wider in these sources. And the lighting effects are different, but I like yours too.

It looks good! I have to go from memory, but it looks quite accurate to the thing in the movie (I only saw the first one so far).
Critique: The only thing I can think of is maybe the copper wiring could be a little shinier, and maybe have some very minute scratches (?) That's really nit picking, though...

Just out of interest - he made it in a cave under threat to his life in a room full of junk so where in hell does the shiney come from? Perhaps if it was just stripped but I somehow doubt it, copper oxydises very quickly.

Something really strange is occurring with the DA messages today.
