History: A few days before Barvaloy would make landfall on Odo Island, radiation levels at the Marshall Islands suddenly dropped to the standard background radiation level. Perplexed by this, a few Monarch scientists, including the young scientist Eiji Serizawa, began a side mission to find the cause of this unnatural phenomenon. Pretty soon, they began discovering other hints of a greater mystery. Fishermen reported seeing the water underneath them glow a faint blue before dissipating, and others noted the ocean swelling up from below before receding to a more level position. Massive shoals of fish appeared in places where the sea was practically empty of life a few hours ago, and nearby coral reefs have grown several inches seemingly overnight. Though sporadic, the accounts of mysterious ocean phenomena formed a trail predicted to eventually reach Odo Island at roughly the same time that Barvaloy was to pass by the area. While certainly unusual, Eiji didn't see much alarm from this phenomenon, and the mission was halted when officials called him over to Odo Island.
When he reached the island on the day Barvaloy would make landfall, the blockade of destroyers and antisubmarine vessels had already surrounded the coastline, while troops on the ground were setting up a plan to finally destroy the beast. Landing there, he noticed the many empty and houses, as well as the lone village elder who stood on the beach. Asking him if he had known of Barvaloy's arrival, the village elder stated what he said to the soldiers who asked him the same question, but instead referred to the sea behemoth as "Gojira". Eiji asked the elder who this Gojira is, and was given a short talk by the elder. He said that his people came to the island long ago, survivors of a disaster that destroyed their home. When fleeing to the island, they were picked off one by one by lesser demons from the sea and sky. But in their darkest hour, the sea behemoth rose from the depth and guided them to this sanctuary that they have called home ever since. Since that day, the people of the island have worshipped the being as their god, whose underwater empire lies just beyond the island's shores. Whenever a demon from the depths of the underworld rises, he is always there to stop them. And this time would be no exception...
Night fell on the expected day of Barvaloy's arrival, but there was still no sign of the creature. All of the villagers had fled to the mountains to hide in naturally occurring caverns, leaving only the soldiers, scientists, and military weaponry at the lower parts of the island. As dawn was creeping up above the horizon, many feared the beast had taken a different route, and that its path to Tokyo was completely unabated. But this suspicion would be shut down when background radiation levels began spiked as dead sea life washed up on the island's shore. Moments later, Barvaloy burst from the sea to lay waste to the armada but was met with intense fire by a triple barrage of ground, naval, and aerial forces. Better prepared this time, the forces continued to batter the beast with round after round of explosions. But despite their best efforts, the attack did nothing but anger the beast further. Within moments, several destroyers were sunken with powerful blasts as the creature made its way to the island's shore. Troops on the ground began loading explosives, desperately trying to fight back against the beast's onslaught. But their valiant efforts were for not as Barvaloy blasted many of them into oblivion. As the creature made landfall on the island, it charged up its Violet Effacer to purge the entire island in a blazing inferno. But just as all hope seemed lost as the creature's body began charging up, it suddenly stopped. It raised its head as it looked around in search of something. Moments later, a faint glow is seen making its way towards the shore followed by three rows of tri-pointed shapes carving through the path of sunken ships. As an incoming tidal wave approached the island, a massive entity rose from the boiling ocean to let out a roar that shook the very heavens themselves. The newly-risen titan snarled at its opponent as soldiers rushed to their stations. But Eiji stood still. He was witnessing the god the elder spoke of. He was now witnessing Gojira.
Barvaloy turned to face its equally sized opponent as the new creature charged forward with surprising speed. With a thunderous impact, the devilspawn was taken aback at the immense power of this creature. The fight raged on as the two beasts shook mountains and churned seas. While Barvaloy's energy attacks damaged the second creature's hide, the sea behemoth continued to pummel its dark foe with powerful bites and tail whips. As the battle raged between the two beasts, the military watched the event not knowing what they should do. After being informed by Eiji that the second creature, so-called by the natives as Gojira, had come to kill Barvaloy. Hearing this information, it was decided that, at least for the moment, the military would aid Godzilla (Note by [REDACTED]: The name was almost immediately anglicized due to the person mishearing the name, but it was understandable since explosions were going off in the background) in his battle against the Barvaloy. As military units bombarded Barvaloy, they began dealing significant damage, thanks to Godzilla's powerful jaws and claws tearing through the armor. Finally, it seemed like the tide was turning for the troops, as Godzilla continued to pummel Barvaloy in the ongoing battle. But the dark foe would not be defeated so easily. Grabbing an opportunity, it toppled Godzilla over with its powerful tail and launched a double barrage of Tesla Beams and Violet Effacer on the titan that resulted in an explosion that destroyed many aerial and ground troops. Looking upon its fallen opponent, Barvaloy turned its attention back to the military units. Expecting another deadly energy barrage, the units stood their ground waiting for the inevitable...
...Until a faint glow was seen coming from the burning crater. Onlookers, both human and daikaiju alike turned to see the brilliant blue aura overtake the burning violet flames around the crater as Godzilla stood to his full height, his entire body illuminating with a pulsating blue as his face dawned a purposeful grimace. It didn't take a genius to figure out what it meant: You're dead.
In moments, he launched a blue beam out of his mouth that instantly blasted through Barvaloy's shoulders. Before Barvaloy could retaliate, Godzilla launched a second attack, incinerating two of Barvaloy's arms. Military units took advantage of the opportunity and launched a full-on attack that blasted off more chunks of Barvaloy. Despite its injuries, the demon was relentless. It launched itself at Godzilla, knocking him back down onto his belly. But this time, the sea behemoth had a surprise trick. Unleashing the blue laser into the ground, he launched himself backward into Barvaloy's body, impaling his foe with his dorsal plates. Orienting himself so that Barvaloy would face the sky, the alpha predator unleashed several powerful pulses of energy that incinerated Barvaloy's body in a brilliant display of beauty and destruction. Finally, the rampage had come to an end.
With Barvaloy eliminated, the military units now only had to contend with Gojira. Units were ready for the titan to begin attacking, but surprisingly, Godzilla walks back into the sea, leaving the military units to their own devices. As military troops escorted wounded soldiers on functioning ship, Eiji watched the sea behemoth's plates slip back into the inky depths of the ocean...
Days after the event, Monarch received a massive increase in funding in light of the discovery of Gojira. With their new founded power, Monarch established a research facility on Odo Island designated as Outpost Shiva. They began asking the natives about all they know of Gojira, as well as scouring deep into the furthest wells of human myth and culture. They discovered that Gojira and his kind have had a far greater impact on human history than they could have possibly imagined: Naval invasions by power-hungry nations thwarted by Godzilla-like creatures as indicated by burn marks on ship ruins, the Thrishulum (a Hindu triton) modeled after the shape of Godzilla's dorsal plates, devastating tsunamis that occurred when no earthquake or landslide was present, and so much more. The natives speak of how Gojira/Godzilla would join forces with other beast gods, most notably with the "Fiercest Beast" and the "Star-Bringer", as well as come to blows with others, most oftentimes with the "Three Kings of Terror". Such valuable knowledge has spear-headed Monarch's rise to importance as they scour the globe for unknown beasts like Godzilla. No longer the laughingstock among the government's more secret projects, they had been reborn into something else entirely. So it was only fitting that they decided for a name change...
After a few days of name suggestion and one voting later, Apex was born...
Description: A semi-aquatic hyperfaunal daikaiju, Gojira (or Godzilla) is perhaps the most powerful member of a species that already secures a place at the top of the food chain. The people of Odo worship him as a god, and evidence suggests similar beliefs in now-extinct native communities across the Pacific and Indian oceans. Such a belief has truth to it, as Godzilla's power puts him near the top of a pantheon of gods of which is rules as king.
With powerful jaws lined with bone-smashing teeth, short but powerful arms tipped with deadly claws, and a tail powerful enough to level a skyscraper in one swing, Godzilla packs a deadly set of offensive physical weapons. He also has powerful defenses, as his entire body is covered in several layers of overlapping structures akin to shark skin that makes him nearly impervious to conventional weaponry. Some of these structures have evolved into tall dorsal plates that are incredibly durable and act as a deterrent from airborne attackers (due to them not being part of the creature's skeleton, the dorsal plates have limited movement that allows for the organism to turn and bend comfortably). These structures are further strengthened by metallic elements, giving them a silvery tint, as well as reflecting energy attacks. If this wasn't enough, his defenses are further greater bolstered by his regenerative properties derived from specialized cells his body produces (termed G-cells) which quickly heal any wounds inflicted if fed intense radiation. Where and how exactly these cells are produced is unknown (though it is hypothesized they are produced by a specific organ).
Besides a few silvery-tinted areas, Godzilla is a mostly uniform dark color. While initially thought to serve as camouflage beneath the deep sea, the dark skin also serves a much more important purpose. Skin samples show the scales of Godzilla are rich in the naturally produced pigment melanin. Due to this, Godzilla's entire body can absorb geothermal, gamma, and light radiation from his environment (a non-kaiju example of this would be the fungi of Chernobyl). This often leads to dramatic declines in radiation levels in areas recently subject to a nuclear bomb/accident. His radiotrophic absorption abilities power a series of biological nuclear reactors in his body, allowing him to subsist largely on the radiation produced by the Earth's core and the Sun (though, he will occasionally devour radioactive ore to deposit exotic metals into his body, as well as the occasional hyperfaunal organism). But Godzilla is also able to use his atomic radiation for other purposes. Air-filled tubes run through some of the reactors and into the plates, where they can be used in intimidation or mating displays. But perhaps his most famous usage of radiation is as an offensive weapon.
Rather than just being sustained off it, Godzilla can harness the radiation produced by his body to power deadly attacks. The biological nuclear reactors in his body are part of a biological system (dubbed the Bio-Nuclear Circulatory System) that extends from the tail to the plates and ends at the head of the creature, and it is responsible for the creature's more infamous attacks. One attack, the "Plasma Cutter", forms when the reactors in the tail heat the muscle bundles, cutting the air into plasma with powerful swings that can create explosive shockwaves that strike objects lucky enough to miss the first shot. Reactors near the dorsal plate section of the creature can have their radioactive energy redirected into the plates themselves, releasing a full body nuclear pulse. Within a short radius, it can immolate the air and blow away larger objects, while over a larger range, can interfere with electromagnetic fields, which results in short-lived lightning storms and an EMP that fries electronics. The electromagnetic disturbance is powerful enough to pull in objects towards Godzilla within a radius of a few hundred meters. His most infamous attack, the "Atomic Breath", results when atomic energy enters a crop-like organ (dubbed the Nucleosyntheic Sac), before being ejected out as a superheated and condensed vapor of atomic energy. This vapor is capable of reaching Mach 1, able to strike ground-based foes accurately from a few kilometers away, and has enough pressure and heat behind it to carve straight through the nuclear warhead-resistant dorsal armor of Barvaloy. The force behind the attack is so great that Godzilla first needs to firmly plant his two feet and muscular tail into the ground before expelling the vapor, as it could potentially topple the creature if there is not enough support. The flash created by the expulsion of this attack is so great, that Godzilla's kind has developed secondary eyelids so that they don't go blind during the attack (if they ever do though, they can be repaired with the help of G-cells). Prolonged usage of the attack can drain Godzilla of energy, but one attack is usually enough to end a fight, one way or another. His radiation absorption abilities also mean he can quickly recover from fatigue.
However, Godzilla's continuously atomic power-producing adaptation comes at a cost. Like all daikaiju, his body continuously absorbs radiation and is very good at insulating the resulting heat, which could lead to the creature overheating. This isn't a problem in his deep-sea habitat, where the immense cold keeps his body temperature regulated despite the constant release of heat into the environment, but on dry land, it becomes a problem. To counter this, his kind has evolved an organ that runs on the ventral side of the tail, which takes in cold seawater that cools his body (much like the cooling water seen in nuclear power plants). Additionally, Godzilla can produce an electromagnetic field, which he can manipulate to cool the water molecules around him, causing the surrounding temperature to drop to make it easier to keep cool when traveling across the land. Finally, a highly developed respiratory system running through the entire creature's body further aids in heat loss. Still, some scientists think that, if exposed to enough radiation, the heat-dispersing adaptations of Godzilla (and a few other select daikaiju/kaiju) might not be enough to regulate the resulting body heat. What would happen if Godzilla absorbed too much radiation is currently unknown...
While superficially resembling a reptile, Godzilla possesses traits from many organisms. His facial structure and lower jaw arraignment are like that of a more derived synapsid, an extra row of teeth on the roof of his lower jaw like that of a mosasaur or temnospondyls, as well as the aforementioned dermal structures similar to sharkskin. DNA analysis concluded that Godzilla's kind is far older than any tetrapod or even animal, belonging to a group of kaijufied organisms informally known as "sauroforms", a group of ancient, radiomixotrophic organisms that superficially resemble reptiles, but descend from a branch of life that evolved sometime after the Great Oxygenation Event (more recent dating suggest potentially older origins). Major identifiable features of this group include holes on the dorsum that release excess heat during energy-based attack emissions, a series of ganglia running throughout the entire body (NOTE: Godzilla himself possess a secondary "brain" in his hip region that acts as a backup if the primary brain is damaged), the aforementioned tail organ, gills, and many other traits. Based on scant fossil evidence, Godzilla's branch of sauroforms evolved sometime during the Cambrian Explosion and later became apex predators just after the Permian Mass Extinction Event (some suggest they were only able to do so after the extinction of the previous apex predator, though as to what this hypothetical apex carnivore could be, no one yet knows). The exact age of Godzilla himself is up for debate, though some dating methods put him around a few tens of thousands of years old, though other results suggest younger values for his date of birth. It is unknown if any of these dates means he's an exceptionally old individual or if he is in the prime of his life and still has some growing to do...
Character: In battle, Godzilla is extraordinarily vicious, fighting his opponents with such brutality that most fights often end as fast as they began. Godzilla does not know surrender, as will fight against his opponent until he is either victorious or dead. This is only accentuated by his battle tactics. While intelligent tests at this moment are impossible, it is known that Godzilla can formulate and improvise when battling an opponent (though this mainly on the spot thinking, as he does not usually enter a battle with an extensive planned assault). This was most notably seen near the end of his battle with Barvaloy, where he used his atomic breath to blast backward into Barvaloy and deliver the finishing blow. The islanders even stated that after returning from a long journey to the south, Godzilla was seen picking up stones and attempting to form a sharpened cutting blade by bashing the two against each other, an example of tool use (However, he doesn't seem to use tools all that much in combat due to the effectiveness of his atomic and physical powers). Despite his vicious brutality in battle, he very rarely seems to kill his enemies and will let them go after defeating them (Barvaloy seems to be an exception to this, and Godzilla completely incinerated him with his atomic power before destroying the bits and pieces left of him that were scattered across the beach). While some would see this as a sign of benevolence, it could also be that Godzilla setting an example to the rest of the daikaiju, for dead monsters tell no tales.
That isn't to say Godzilla isn't devoid of benevolence. While some now-extinct cultures view him as an indifferent force of nature, accounts by the people of Odo (who seem to be in contact with Godzilla the most) suggest he may not be so indifferent as some myths paint him. The ancient tale where he guided the ancestors of the natives to Odo, accounts where he purposefully dives under boats to avoid destroying them, as well as hauling up onshore simply to observe what the people are doing. He is also occasionally seen swimming up to [DATA EXPUNGED]. Why Godzilla seems to view particular members of humanity with interest is yet unknown. His relations to other daikaiju are also still being researched on, especially his relations with [DATA EXPUNGED], as it is still unknown what he gains from their presence. Either way, there is still much to learn about what goes on within the mind of this titan of the sea.

Mostly because of how much the story ended up changing. Godzilla being a "bad guy" didn't really make that much sense and also didn't really give all that many points for character development in the new story, so he's a more neutral figure in the reboot.

I haven't actually taken count. But expect A LOT of monsters to be in this reboot. Currently, we're in the very early stages of the "backstory" section of the series, where details Apex's history and plot points that will kickstart the events of the actual story itself.
