I use the chalk pastel brush in PSCS3. Also some of my own brushes I made. Try using a hard brush and not a soft brush and see how that works... soft brushes tend to be difficult to control, and leave you with many soft blurry edges... no defining moments..
Still, nice to see your process and how you put things down.

You should use some texture brushes. It makes the job easier and more detailed and alived. You could make some brushes using the watercolor stuff you do, that would be kind of great.
