Description
Icon: ReduxIn 1839, an alien starliner malfunctioned and exploded, and a jettisoned lifepod crashed in the middle of a cotton field in the American South. The pod automatically altered the appearance of its passenger named Arnus to mimic the first sentient life-form who discovered him. That life-form was a slave woman named Miriam, who saw the pod crash land.
In the present, Arnus is still with us. His alien physiology and powers makes him extermely long lived here on earth. Posing as Augustus Freeman IV, the great-grandson of his original human identity and still marooned, Augustus waits for Earth's technology to catch up to his lifepod's. However it seems his time has run out, recent scans from his lifepod prove what he has been avoiding for the last decade. Augustus is dying.
Secretly Augustus has always performed quiet acts of charity. However, in light of his deteriorating health the declining state of his surrogate home is beginning to weigh on him. Having lived through slavery he senses a trend in the world that could potentially lead to worse attrocities ahead. Augustus thought he would have more time.
One night, Augustus' house is broken into by 3 teenagers. One of which is Raquel, an idealistic teenage girl with a mischevious streak. Raquel lives on Paris Island, the poorest, most gang-ridden neighborhood in Dakota City. Her prospects seemed fairly bleak until this chance encounter with Augustus Freeman IV. Agustus quickly dispatches the intruders and lets them go on the condition that they turn away from a life of iniquity.
Inspired, curious, and after seeing him use his powers, Raquel tries to persuade Augustus to become a superhero named Icon. Agustus declines citing his declining health. But decides to use the last of the energy in his lifepod to transfer his abilities to Raquel. Armred with the powers of a god Raquel becomes ICON. With the help of her mentor Arnus they set out to save a world that doesn't even know it needs to be saved.

First off that's really cool and interesting.
I mean I still prefer if Icon was there because the contrast of Icon and Rocket representing two slices of blackness against each other was one of my favorite parts.
However this does present a lot of opportunities and I'd be willing to read it and see how it turns out. It's definitely a cool take on Icon even if we don't have a Rocket to go with him.

I think ultimately Raquel will eventually become Icon. I always liked the fact both seem to learn and grow from each other. I could eventually see Augustus taking a new name and her taking over the mantle. Icon is more than the name it's the changes you make when you take it.

exactly! when I read the 1st collected edition I kinda wanted her to ease into the mantle. I just thought she was the one a little more in touch with the struggle and common man being that Agustus was an alien. Being a single mother/Superhero the kind with out a whole ton of money to back her up would make for some great stories...at least for me.

I can see that. But as it goes on I can't imagine Agustus would leave her. Agustus needs her as much as she needs him due to his age as well he sees alot. He may also have alot of ideas that changed. But she helps him see things as they are and the "human condition" and he has alot of wisdom to share since he did actually grow up as a slave, fight in the civil war , etc. . I could see that being interesting too. What do you do when lives are in danger and there's no one you know near or trust to protect your child. Do you out yourself as a super hero? Do you run and hope no one gets killed or someone else shows up? I don't see her struggling to much financially. Agustus to me kind of sees her I may say as a daughter or sorts. I couldn't imagine him just putting her out in the cold. I could be wrong though..
