Are you going to do one with Blue Marvel?
Also, great job. I love Icon.

Icon is one of my favs from the milestone universe. I wish DC would treat him with more respect.

As a character he has too many flaws. In his first issue he was momentarily stunned by a regular bullet, yet he's supposed to be the equivalent of Superman. So I wish Milestone had treated him with more respect from the beginning.

I also wish Milestone gave him more respect but now that hes in the main DC universe, he is treated like a nobody. I hated seeing him actually say that he is weaker than superman in that issue of JLA. All that aside, I still think he has potential and I hope somebody does something soon to raise his status.

I don't think he can be fixed at this point. He's a lost cause like Cage imho.

Thats too bad. I guess if we want cool respectable black superheroes, we gotta make them our selves.

As much of an issue as I have had with McDuffie, his race politics regarding Milestone I still love the idea of at least a psuedo superman archetype that happens to be Black.

I have many issues with this guy. Like you I like the idea of a Black Superman, but this guy was handled poorly.

Nice work, Gary!
Wish I could say I like Icon but I cant.
Besides an unpleasant experience I had with Milestone comics 15 years ago I think I'm still objective enough to say "what where they thinking" when they designed this character.

hulkdaddyg In reply to RODCOM1000 [2010-02-11 20:59:47 +0000 UTC]
He's an "Ugh" character for me. Garish costume, wishy-washy powers and an unnecessary sidekick. The worst part of it all is he's all we've got in the mainstream, thus my inclusion. He actually still has potential to be better, but I think McDuffie may be stuck in his pov. What unpleasant experience with Milestone?

Milestone's a long story, I'll note you about it later.
Well, there's the Blue Marvel guy that Marvel just dug up [link] ,
but I put him in the same category as Sentry in the way that he's like an after thought.
'Yeah, these super-mega-ultra characters existed all the time but everybody just forgot about them'. Weak.

I had read about this guy and I just don't know what Marvel was thinking. Why in the hell retcon a guy like that into Marvel? If he's been there, where was he when Galactus threatened earth? Or other major threats? He didn't get involved because of a presidential order? Now they made an all powerful coward. I roll my eyes at him with you. *whatever* Marvel.

When you say "He's all we've got in the mainstream", what do you mean?
Are you talking "Superman level", or just in general?
π: 0 β©: 1
hulkdaddyg In reply to Gogo-Kaibutsu [2010-02-12 04:21:01 +0000 UTC]
I mean Superman level. There are very few Black characters in Marvel or DC with any real power. You could name John Stewart, but he's just one of many of the same.

Gogo-Kaibutsu In reply to hulkdaddyg [2010-02-12 05:20:10 +0000 UTC]
understood.
I believe you're right, too.
The more powerful ones are generally found with power/energy manip
skills (Static, Black Lightning, Storm, Monica Rambeau, etc.)
As far as raw strength goes, black characters are either short-changed (I have a long rant about Luke Cage from way back in the day still floating around the net somewhere) or, can't achieve it without mech. (Steel, Hardware, etc. Don't get me wrong, the armor suits are insanely powerful and versatile, but still...)

hulkdaddyg In reply to Gogo-Kaibutsu [2010-02-12 05:59:38 +0000 UTC]
I have been intending to write a rant about Cage myself! If you can shoot me a link, I'd be most grateful. I absolutely hate Cage and the fact that most White people love him. I bristle just thinking on that one point. I should also have been a bit more specific too, there is an almost absence of any high powered Black American male characters. There are only two I can think of presently, Rage and Maxam both of whom they made so flawed they are pretty much useless. I will point out too that neither of them can approach Thor or Superman levels.

I wrote that rant on Angelfire almost 10 years ago.
If I can find it, i will send you the link.
As far as Cage goes, I dunno about or care about his fanbase.
What makes me angry is that, as far as his power levels go, he's
pretty wimpy. I mean, even Spidey's skinny butt can lift a city bus.
Cage, though far stronger than a regular person, can only lift about 3 tons max.
He's bullet "resistant", not bullet-proof, and though
to his CREDIT, he's not "stereotypical 70's angry black manβ’" anymore, there are
still quite a few stereotypical elements to him that should be done away with here in 2010.
Bendis has done a bit of good with him, to be honest, but not quite enough.

hulkdaddyg In reply to Gogo-Kaibutsu [2010-02-12 16:19:45 +0000 UTC]
They recently powered him up a bit, he can now lift around 30 tons and has always been bullet proof up to about an rpg. I cite his fanbase because that's the driving factor that keeps him what he is. They created an ignorant ass character and have stuck with it. Most of his writers have been White guys who can only speculate what it is to be Black and it's an entertainment industry so they can only go with what they think is entertaining. Also let's be honest, the major purchasers of comics are White guys and that's who they intend to appeal to. He remains ignorant and stereotypical to me. One more thing about his earlier powers, he was supposed to be the upgrade from the super soldier formula that created Captain America. Had they kept in line with that thinking he would've made for a much better character but instead we get him squaring off vs the Hulk and it's just not right. For the most part, Marvel has gone out of it's way to make this guy look bad.

Exemplary work!

Thanks. If they do, I hope they make them better and less stereotypical representations of minorities. I personally hate Icon costume. Love the idea of a Black Superman though.
