Description Original title being kept here as well because this was essentially what I was doing when I was painting this! XD

Ughh...I blame this thing for killing my motivation in February... I don't know WHY I think it's a good idea to draw crystals when I'm already unmotivated because I CLEARLY can't draw them well without frustration.

*sigh* But I tried. And made myself hate myself for it later... >W<

So this is, according to my book, unfinished.  It is not refined enough to be called complete.  This was actually going to have full lineart, but I was having so much trouble with the anatomy in the sketch I was just screw, let's just paint the stupid thing.  Which I'm glad I did, I don't think I would have gotten this far in this if I hadn't! I tried adding in as many details as I could, but eventually it just descended into a speedpaint.  A long speedpaint, but a speedpaint nevertheless.

I still have mixed feelings about this now, to be honest!  The anatomy could be better, and there are many unfinished element in it (namely those stupid crystals >W< ) I guess if I were to say something positive, the rocks didn't come out half bad.  Unfinished, yes, but from a distance they look pretty nice! ^w^

Wow!  Love the loose, painterly style!!  There's a nice sense of depth here, partly the use of light and shadow, partly the less detailed far wall.  Nice job!

Crystals are an odd thing to draw, I never know how to make them look. X3
I still think these look great though, and the shading and detail for both shard and the background is amazing. c: I think the unfinished look works for it, it draws focus to Shard's face and gives a bit or perspective on the depth of the setting.

ok, firstly, WOW

Honestly it looks p complete to me, I wouldn't do anything else with it to be honest, that rough painted look is really quite nice, really it looks amazing as is! I'm just an imperfectionist freak lol
Shards new look is super awesome, I love the way you've drawn her! Also those crystals looks beautiful.
This really does look nice, and the anatomy mistakes aren't all that noticable, so don't worry too much! (also it looks fine close up!)

Oh, wow, this comment... ;a;

I guess the creator sees things the viewer does not, especially if said creator has perfectionist tendencies and is never satisfied with ones work! dang it, self...

But thank you so much for the kind comment, it really means a lot! ;A;

ke-tah In reply to 16Shards [2015-03-29 03:09:41 +0000 UTC]

;o;

haha yeah that is true, as the creator, you do see the faults quicker (and worse) than the viewer, gah, mistakes can be like an itch you just can't scratch. I used to have a perfectionist issue, but I guess I sort of weened myself out of it X3

you're most welcome!!!

16Shards In reply to ke-tah [2015-03-29 03:19:32 +0000 UTC]

;w;

Exactly. Perhaps even worse than that.

Ahhh, teach me your secrets! ;A; Even if it only helps a little, just anything to tone down my perfectionism. >w< I'm really only kidding, though! XD Solutions for anxiety and perfectionism aren't that simple. You can't just tell the person to stop caring as much because it simply doesn't work that way. The person needs to find that out how to do it themselves, which I must say is an...interesting experience! ^^'

>w<

Hahaha lol yeah I don't think there's anything I could say to help anyway! After all we're all different so what worked for me probably wouldn't work for you (also like you said, it's not so easy as telling someone to change X3) but what did help me was just seeing a certain style of landscape art that I really liked, I liked the messiness of it, it just appealed to me more than polished works for some reason, it looked more organic I guess

16Shards In reply to ke-tah [2015-03-29 15:36:58 +0000 UTC]

Right! X3

That's a really nice way of looking at it. Actually, I agree with that, sometimes messy art does look better than polished works.  It can be more dynamic or interesting.  It's just whenever I am doing it, it always feels like there is more that could be done.  Like it's not yet finished, even if it might look like it.

ke-tah In reply to 16Shards [2015-03-29 22:04:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I still have that problem too haha, I continuously work on it to the point where I do it too much and it just looks bleh XP it can be so hard to stop sometimes though hahaha!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

16Shards In reply to ke-tah [2015-03-30 21:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Ahah, yeah, it can be!  But then the piece just starts to get overworked, you know? And then it's sometimes not worth it to spend so much time on one piece. It's just tough deciding...when you actually are done...

...That's why I sketch with a pen, force myself to stop that way! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ke-tah In reply to 16Shards [2015-03-31 00:10:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeup that sounds about right XD

hahaha funny you should say that because thats the exact reason why I sketch in pen! I was so nervous when I started doing pen sketches, but now I really love it! It teaches you to really accept your mistakes and find a way to work with them, not mention messy pen sketches are awesome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

16Shards In reply to ke-tah [2015-03-31 22:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Lol! XD

Oh wow, cool! Actually...now that I think about that I probably should have remembered that. (just went back to look at your Tumblr and you do have pen sketches.  My brain just decided not to remember that, uhhhhh... ;a; )  But yeah, that's the other reason why I sketch in pen.  It forces you to keep your mistakes, instead of trying to fix them over and over again, and makes you acknowledge their existence. XD Hopefully by doing that you won't make the same mistake twice (or...it will at least make you aware of it) and become a faster artist.
