Description Gumbo is a mixed breed. People often think he is part Aussie, but his head is huge. Aussies look microcephalic next to him. No, he's part Catahoula Leopard Dog. The other part is something long-haired, probably setter. I think Gordon Setter. Anyway, he has huge webbed feet and is very at home walking in muck. So here he is doing his thing. Notice that there are no ducks in the picture. That is because Gumbo flushed them out of the water and over to the far side of the lake.

OH MY! I have a Catahoula/Husky mix and he looks JUST LIKE THAT! Hahaha. I love the tale, it's identical to my dogs (but it makes quite a mess!!!) Happy to see another sweet looking 'houla!

What a handsome guy Gumbo is! He looks quite loveable. I'll be after a good swap-muck-about, he like to come right up to you and shake off. My springer's like that.

Yes, he does love to share. That's the beauty of dogs. They like to share everything - slobbery toys, slimy bones, and mucky muck!

What's funny, the muckier, the dirtier, the grosser the gift...the more preciousl they think it is!

His coloring is a Catahoula Leopard dog red leopard coloring. Catahoulas come in 5 different colors and they can be solid, mixed, or merle. The red and blue leopard names refer to the merle coloring. The most rare coloring for the Cat is the 5 color. They are fascinating dogs. We ran into a pure bred Catahoula today at the dog park, a blue leopard. The gal told me that she bought 2 from a breeder in Florida for $1,000 a piece. They use them on their small horse ranch in Queen Creek. She brings them to the dog park for the socialization, not the exercise since they get enough running with the horses. I'm really kicking myself for not having my camera there. Beautiful dog!

I have honestly never heard of the breed - I've been flipping through my "Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" and can't find anything by that name. Are they known by any other names, or do you have any good info links on them?

The lesser known name is Catahoula Cur. It's a rare breed, and a lot of dog books don't include it. The best source of information about them is this web site: [link] I met a guy here on DA from Louisiana who told me that the saying down there is that the Catahoula is the only real dog left and that if you put all the dogs in the world on an island, after 5 years, they'd all be Catahoulas because it is such a dominant breed. Gumbo has a lot of setter in his personality, however he can go from happy-go-lucky to tough-as-nails on a dime. He's quite amazing.

You are most welcome! Always glad to introduce someone new to the wonderful world of Catahoulas! Some day, perhaps there will be a Catahoula fairy that insists on being in one of your drawings.

LOL You're far more likely to see such a beastie in one of my fairy portraits than the other Amy Brown's pieces - I couldn't see a Catahoula dressed in stripey socks being a big seller on a pseudo-goth T-shirt at Hot Topic.

It wouldn't stop me from drawing one though, just for the fun of it.

I don't know, a spotted dog in stripey socks could be very cool. I'll have to see if Gumbo will model some for me.
