Description
In Newport News, Virginiaresides a navy man and a
Connecticut-born wife,
a black-haired tot turning
three years on May 10, 1998,
and Snowball the cat.
Feet thunder up steps and
a voice calls out frantically.
Louder, louder, and
louder--because where is she?
She, the little girl with the black hair
and the big brown eyes.
The woman from the little state
is alone in the great big house,
her navy husband not due home
for two weeks at least
and Snowball the cat likely having fled
from the second story window again.
High and low she's looked, in
every crevice and corner.
What's a 23-year old to do
when she's misplaced a child?
That child, with the black hair and
the brown eyes and the little hands.
Those little hands--wait.
There's a shadow beneath the crib.
A finger sticks out: one, two, three,
four, five. A giggle and a squeal,
twinkling brown orbs stare out at the
mother in mischievous delight.
"How did you get under there,
you silly girl?"
The woman is laughing, laughing, and
laughing now--because all
is well again
in Newport News, Virginia.

Beautiful. You start the poem as if it's a headline on the 6 o'clock news, and then end with such childlike innocence that could brighten anyone's day. And we need more of that Well written.

I love it (and after reading the hospital piece, I have to admit -- I was so glad it had a happy ending)!! Β The story unfolds beautifully, and the writing is equally beautiful, to match. Β Well done! Β

What a beautiful piece. I love how simple it is, and yet captures successfully the worry of a mother for her child.

This is really sweet! Honestly I was expecting there to be like an American Horror Story plot twist and was relieved when it didn't happen lol But again its really sweet and very well written
