Never too late for extra protection!
I wouldn't like to be the bear though!
Nice looking you btw!

Awwwww....you are too kind! If it's me or the bear to survive.....hopefully it's going to be ME! I learned about the necessity of protection after years of living here! Too many true "bear stories" and some tragic injuries and some deaths. I'm not too fond of the idea of being a "statistic"!!

I've heard other options to scare the bear!
Shouting as louder as you can or use something like a dead branch and bring it over your head to show him that you're taller!

Thanks....I'l add that to my "bag of tricks"! Then there's the "bear bells" and shaking rocks in a can, and singing at the top of your voice (I've done that!) and......you hope SOMETHING works!

beautiful country....do you have grizzlies or kodiak bears?.....or both?

It is gorgeous here! We have grizzlies and black bear on the mainland (the largest past of the state by far)and Kodiak bear (the really huge brown bear) on Kodiak Island, where I lived for a year. I was young and very naive then years ago and I used to go salmon fishing alone, standing in the river all day, 50 miles away from the small town of Kodiak - and not a soul in sight for miles and miles - and no gun!! Fortunatley I never saw one of the Kodiak bears - which love salmon! Some of us just get lucky - and survive!

You're one tough-looking lady, Anita! Never sass a gal when she's holding an AK-47. No, I know it's not an AK, but it's a big old honkin' gun, for real. And I also know you're NOTHING AT ALL like old Sarah ("I quit") Palin! Anyway, I think the "Sports Illustrated" idea is a good one.

All kidding aside, that is just a great picture of you. It's a terrific ID!

Aww.....thanks so much Jean! (yeah we did't much like the "quitting" up here) After my son taught me how to use this particular gun (I have shot a number of other ones) I told him that if I had to use it - it would probably knock me flat on my can! He laughed and said "yeah"! lol Yeah - I think I might do a Sports Illustrated cover parody for fun - it would be as hoot! I just have to get creative and think of how to write the cover! It was my son's idea for the photo! Of couse I didn't protest!

Well, good luck, Anita. I hope you do a cover either way, for real or parody! That big gun looks as though it would pack quite a wallop with the kick. I never was good at shooting because any gun would knock my hand back....even a dinky .22!

Very cool. What type of load do you have in that shotgun? (The gun looks like a Ruger 12 gauge..)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1arcticfox In reply to djberry [2009-08-04 17:08:54 +0000 UTC]

It is a 12 gauge, short barrel shotgun but not a Rugar. It's my son's "Bear gun" - only for protection - we don't hunt - and I can't remember the make. I will ask him He did show me how to use it in the event he was injured and I had to shoot it! I grew up with guns because my dad grew up in the Depression and they had to hunt for food. Dad used to take me hunting with him and he hunted for food - not for sport. I shot my first gun - a .22 rifle when I was about 14. I enjoy the "skill" aspect of target shooting, but only use them for protection.

djberry In reply to 1arcticfox [2009-08-04 18:31:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm the same way. I don't own any pieces at the moment. I used to shotgun hunt when I lived in Massachusetts.. meat for the freezer. I had a breech loading, 12 gauge, long-barrel shotgun. I used single-slug magnum shells... Massachusetts only allows shotguns for deer hunting...

1arcticfox In reply to djberry [2009-08-04 23:37:16 +0000 UTC]

I think that's similar to what my dad used when he hunted deer. Did you have moose in Massachusetts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

djberry In reply to 1arcticfox [2009-08-06 01:50:37 +0000 UTC]

Moose began extending their range from further North in the late 80's. I was one of the first people to see them when I lived in southern NH. (Around 1991) ..good story. They have a lottery tag hunt in Northern Maine for moose. Otherwise, they are off limits.

djberry In reply to 1arcticfox [2009-08-06 15:22:51 +0000 UTC]

OK... I was cross country skiing on the campus of the school I lived at. The campus is 1770 acres.. woods, mountain, lots of beaver swamps; perfect moose habitat. I came across the tracks in a pasture, then then dropping, and then later the scrapes on trees near a beaver pond. Nobody would believe. Our resident expert poo-pooed the whole notion that moose would be so far South... We were sitting in my dorm living room one afternoon...my dorm was where the faculty met... I glanced out the window to see a bull moose saunter by.. right down the drive in the middle of our campus... I turned to "the expert" and said, "Look out the window.".. his eyes bugged out, his jaw dropped.. The moment he looked, a cow moose came by with TWIN calves... needless to say, the meeting was effectively over as we scrambled to the windows to see the windows.. the four moose calmly went down to the pond at the bottom of the hill, went in, and began to feed... My "expert" had to publicly, and profusely apologize. After that, if I made an observation, or saw something out on campus, everybody took my word for it..

Love this new ID for you And with your "1ArcticFox - A real Alaska Woman - out in the wilderness - loaded for bear defense!" it could be a real ad ^^

But is it really a shotgun you have in your hands ??!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1arcticfox In reply to DameOdessa [2009-08-04 17:37:20 +0000 UTC]

lol Thank you so much! I actually thought about doing a cover mock-up for the magazine, Sports Illustrated - just for fun! I may do it yet! And YES.....it is a REAL shotgun! We were 120 miles from the city, and miles and miles from the nearest town and/or medical help - and out way down a river where bears and moose are know to hang out! In fact one of the trails we took in a dry portion of a side channel of the river....was coverd in moose tracks! You'd better believe we kept a sharp eye out the whole time!!

1arcticfox In reply to pralinkova-princezna [2009-08-04 17:29:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh I understand that. But as I mentioned in one of my replies, I grew up with my dad taking me hunting, for food so I am not afraid of them. I don't personally hunt - we take them strictly for protection from the bears - and moose, since both are very dangerous. We've even had bears right here in the city, because there is vast wilderness around the city - and a number of bear attacks on runners here in the city last summer. (in the woods of the city) I ALWAYS have bear spray with me when walking in the woods of the city and the surrounding area!

You know, it's interesting...I came here quite young and you just "get used" to it, and take the normal precautions as much as you can...and then don't think too much about it! I'm much more afraid of going to one of our very populated states, and having to do "combat driving" in eight lanes of traffic on a freeway!!
