That is true about driving, I have a licence but I don't drive, I was never good at it, and in cities it is terrible.

actually, that's a rifle, not a pistol.

A pistol would not stop an Alaskan grizzly.

Well, a Desert Eagle .50 would, but you'd only get ONE shot, with the recoil, and if you missed --

you're in deep shit!

Yes....you don't want to miss - if a huge Alaskan grizzly starts running toward you! And you can be lucky - to get ONE shot off! However it is not a rifle but a 12 gauge, short barrel, pump-action shotgun - made for bear! We also had bear spray (a large cannister of pepper spray made just for bear protection)

I meant to ask when you first posted this; Is that a Mossberg you're packing, and also, do you prefer loading slugs or shot for backcountry travel?

It's a short 18" barrel, pump action Maverick 88 - made especially for bears. Loading is alternated between slugs and shot. Maverick is wholly owned by Mossberg. Are you based in the Interior currently? Just wonderfing where you were doing your photography.

LOL, you have good taste! I picked up my Maverick 88 about ten years ago and declined the second longer barrel and pistol grips that they were trying to tell me I'd want. In addition to bear spray, I sometimes also carry a hand held air horn that I'll use at a fair distance when approaching thick brush or limited sight areas. Seems to work -very- well since I've seen plenty of fresh tracks, but no bears where I wouldn't necessarily want to surprise a bear.

To answer your question, yes, I'm in the interior lately. A limited number of my photographs are from Southcentral when I lived near Big Lake for the 90's up until all the jetskis and bayliners spilled over into the smaller outlying lakes. When the loons finally gave up trying to nest and it became more headache than pleasure to try to take the canoe out, I headed north. The vast majority of my photographs were taken right out in the yard (or out the loft windows) here in Fairbanks. Ten years from now, I'll probably pick up and move further out again, but for now, it's pretty nice here.

Yep...have to be here out in the wilds of Alaska! We have very large grizzley bears in much of Alaska, and certainly where I live and travel! I'm not too interesed in being some bears, "lunch" snack! Thanks for viweing and commenting!

yep I know a bit about Alaska. My ex lived there for quite a few years. I was glad I didn't have to move up there when we got married though. He moved to Texas instead.

Then you know that it's sure warmer in Texas than here! I guess it's good we're all so different or we'd all be living on top of each other! I've been in Texas a number of times and love San Antonio, but could never live there due to the heat!

LOL! Yeah I would definitely love to live somewhere a bit cooler! The only problem is that when you get to cooler climates it usually comes with snow at one point or another and I'm snow-phobic when it comes to driving! arg! My ex would tell me his horror stories about trying to get up hills (and going down hills) in snowy weather! Those were totally chilling experiences in more ways than one and not something I really want to have to face! The terrain here is much flatter than Alaska too; so at least when I start hydroplaning on water or mud, I don't usually have to deal with steep hills on top of it. He also told me about the drop after you get across the mountains flying into Juneau too and I'd probably be white-knuckled just from visiting the place! They would have to peel my hands off the seat finger by finger once we landed! LOL!

Fortunately I live in Anchorage! I wouldn't care to fly into Juneau either! Since I'm into photography (and years ago skiing) I love the snow - but draw the line at 15 below! That's my tolerance lmit! The driving? Well....I have some horror stories too, but I put up with it because there's so much else I love about it here!

Oh I love the snow just for the snow itself too! I just don't like the idea of *driving* on it. My ex's folks live in Tacoma, WA and we went up there to visit one time and took a side trip to East WA. We went snow tubing and it was a total blast!!!! It was extremely tiring having to drag the tube back up the hill but it was worth it just to slide down again! LOL! I eventually got too tired to do that though and had to wait in line for the pull rope. The lines were terribly long but it gave me some more time to rest. We played in the snow too making a snowman and a snowdog!! LOL! My ex found something that looked like a leash and connected them so that it looked like he was taking his dog for a walk! Hilarious! The people driving by were all getting a kick out of it too! LOL!

That's the first time in my life when I'd seen that much snow! It has only snowed twice in my lifetime in my hometown that I can remember and neither time was anywhere *near* that much snow. One time was when I was a kid... about 8 or 9 maybe I guess. We got enough snow to build a really dirty, grassy snowman but the poor guy needed a bath something awful! The other time it snowed was only about five or six years ago and we got about four inches. They said it hadn't snowed like that in over 100 years! We all got out in it and had a good time.... building snowmen, throwing snowballs, chasing each other around the yard like a bunch of hooligans. LOL! It was fun! So I definitely do like snow itself.... to play in or to just see how beautiful it makes everything look. I just don't think it's worth the risk of driving on it when I'm so inexperienced with it.

My ex had a cow over the hurricane we had come through a few months after we got married. To me it was nothing. I've been through so many of them that it's just an inconvenience now and nothing that brings terror. He was totally freaking over the whole thing though because that was the first one he had actually been through. So... our life experiences (or lack thereof) can do things like that to us; and snow is one of those "lack thereof" life experiences for me that really chills me to the bone at times but not because of how cold it has to be to snow!

Yes I would *DEFINITELY* not want tolerate the extreme climate either but I'd draw the line **WAY** before 15 below!!!! I'd probably be drawing the line even before 15 *above*!!! I have the upper temperature extreme line falling little by little as well each year. 116F is scorching and I just can't handle it anymore these days. I wish I could find a place that was about 70F the whole year round! I had a friend tell me that Northern CA is pretty much like that but you have earthquakes over there too! If it's not one thing, it's another! LOL! So... I guess I need to just learn to be satisfied with where I am and not be so darn picky. Each place has it's ups and downs and I just need to learn to be content where I am.
