Description Pencil on Mat Board SOLD 1/3/09

Joe by himself, without this background would have been fine, hopefully a good drawing about a gentle man named Joe Kchodl (PaleoJoe). His rugged yet enlightened face, the searching gaze and holding a mysterious frog cane could have told the story. Conceptually this would have been to direct and given too many answers, from my point of view there was much more to tell then this. Now the background gives a mystery that’s unexpected, the viewer needs to get involved, interpret the background in their own way to complete the tale. Certainly I have my reasons for its symbolism; partly it’s a nod to the future and what the next tenants of our small planet will find, as we have found the trilobites. The background alludes to paleontology but not of our time but future times.
The arch, metal, rust, bones, fully exposed on the left and just hinted at on the right, are they the evidence of life of us? All though this drawing is about Joe, or how I perceive Joe, it’s also as much about me, a nexus of the model, the artist and now the viewer, the full artistic circle.

It’s the largest pure portrait drawing I have done, which in itself was a challenge. I do like the massive quality that’s quite unnerving it seduces the viewer from across the room adding to the power of the drawing. I don’t have a title as yet, it will not be “ortrait of PaleoJoe” for it’s about more then that.

I thank everyone for keeping track of this long WIP, I hope it was interesting and I was able to answer some your questions, it’s been quite the journey.

Writers always get to dedicate their books, well I am going to dedicate this drawing: To my dear step-dad, Mr. Carl W. Pitsch, you will live on, within so many, for so very long.

Thanks for looking

How are you doing Sir?
I am quite amazed by the background. Is he an old man who is trying to recall something in the past?
I feel sad when I try to understand the story, he always looks into his past, but he never seen the light shining from the future.
that is what i understand from this drawing. My english is not good, I wish you could understand what I am trying to tell.
anyway this is a stunning work, may I know how big it is?
I am inspired, and always motivated by you, Sir. Your WIPs give me power, sometimes when I start a large drawing, I feel like I can never finish it. And I will look into your gallery, I see you spending few hundred hours in a single drawing, I tell myself that I must never give up!
a few months before I always draw in A4 size, but recently I just completed 2 A2 size portraits and I am currently drawing a 65cmx50cm! haha

thank you, please never stop drawing.

thank you Chong and you are correct there is a forlorn look to this man, possibly his life is in the waning winter of his life. But i also think the viewer is the person who makes the art ART when he or she translates it to their own truth. thank you for your kind words and much success with your own work!

very nice. i'm wondering, how do you deal with the shinyness? i've always hated that about pencil, but it looks like you found some way to overcome it, or at least photograph it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

1nimra In reply to kc7655 [2010-02-12 17:24:52 +0000 UTC]

shinyness happens when you flatten the fiber of the paper and polish the graphite, when I use a .5 mechanical pencil it brakes before I can damage the paper but it take a long time to get a dark area and about five layers. There is still a bit of a shine but no where near what you get with a “normal” pencil

sorry, i've been meaning to reply and ask you a question or two but i kept forgetting.
what paper do you use? do you use a spray fixative to achieve your darks? do you use softer lead or just normal hb? sorry for all the questions. i've been known to bug people for technique tips when they produce work like you do lol.

I never did tell you why I faved this piece:

I just begin with the technical part: The lightfall on this one is beyond phenomenal and the convincing realism worked out in most possible ways. Not only that is the detailing right there where it should be in sight of the vieuwers-pull in context with the "nexus" of essence where you pull the vieuwer right there where you want. And then the composition is just awesome!
That alone would be a fantastic drawing.

Now for all the credit above doesn't really appeal for such grumpyness, rude, impolite, silly, weird, vulgair, antisocial, obstinate, loud mouth and sometimes oversexed hotmail... So I'll say the more core compliments:

This drawing Armin, is a great story on itself. When I see the picture standing besides, I see just another man, as we are in most numbers in reallife. When I look at your drawing, you froze a inner essence rarely seen on the surface of our suppressing society that force us to be cold-hearted, that yet radiates fromout the true and purity of goodness from a person. He gives me the feeling he is very wise and your gracious and royal style match up to a great in almost mideval sent. This drawing shows on which I call true passion. This piece of art deserves more then one watch, and a time to forget to watch and explore all details and aspects like a kid in a candystore. This drawing is a lesson in art with a great eyewink to those surfaced un-original technical drawers which give themselves easely out for artist and I've learned alot not just by gazing with open mouth, but your story tells me alot on how the true artist looks at his work with great understanding, lifeknowledge and above all the soul that is put in!

Take that!!!

OK Mike! yet a mark of art I guess is how it unfolds when the “artist” is done with it, some of my work grows some doesn’t and I don’t know how to control that at all.

It's just a compliment Armin. It is what I think of YOUR work, not what it's supposed to be. To me it shows a ietsiewietsie tinypity more then just photorealism and the best-technique, whatever that is...

oh i take it as a compliment Mike and thank you! I don’t want to knock photorealism or photorealists either I think some are fantastic, but in my personal pursuits I was very conscious at a certain point to veer off in a different direction.

Whoa nimra... beautiful, beautiful work. The wisps of hair, the beard, the soft look in Joe's eyes hiding beneath the furrowed brow, the crow's feet at the corner of his eyes, the wood on the frog staff, his watch... all in all he really looks like a kind soul =] Very, very well done, love it ;3

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It is such an amazing show of talent. Really, thank you! Right, now I have my gushing out of the way, cos yeah, this work inspires me, it really does. *me having just been drawn to draw again after a year away from it - is excited and kinda scared and not at all brave.*

This work made me stop when I saw it, it made me want to get to know the life of the man staring just off to the side at something I cannot see. He has such a gentle face, I feel like I want to know what he has to impart. And that is exactly what I felt when I saw this piece. Normally I see a drawing I think wow that detail is so life like, or I love that contrast, but here it was his soul that drew me in, and to me that is what you have captured here and that is so very, very hard to do. I take my hat off to you and thank you once more for sharing this. *nods and smiles*
