Description Monolithic update
Pencil on Illustration Board

Full drawing 30” x 40” this image 7” x 7”

This is the Second element in this drawing, the sky and bulb being the first.

This is a drawing of my step-fathers eye. An eye that’s seventy-eight years old, an eye akin to hammered gold. An eye that’s experienced prisoner of war camps and the death of many comrades. It’s been witness to beating cancer once and now in the dusk of his years to lung cancer. This symbol speaks of strength and vulnerability; it alludes to the end of one journey and the beginning of another.

(On December 5, 2005 my dear step-dad died in my arms, I will miss him so very much, Gods Speed to you Dad, and all my love always). Armin Mersmann

Thanks for looking

I'm intrigued by photography. The simplicity of surroundings.. Yet I also know exactly what you mean. Sketching gives me more in the end, knowing I created something from scratch.

I suppose both are great vents in the end, but at least we both know which one we spend more time with for good reason.

absolutely beautiful.

When I saw the thumbnail, before I read your description, I thought you had drawn Patrick Stewart's eye.

This is so beautiful.

It's very rare to see a drawing that is so realistic, and one that is so moving and full of love is, of course, much rarer.

Your description is also very moving.
The combination make for a really special experience.

I'm sure he is still around you - and very moved by your tribute.

What interests me about this piece is the honeycomb effect that is visible in several parts...including the top left part of the eyebrow and right under the right side of the eye. Did you intend for this to happen? Or is it a result of working on illustration board?

Althought the eye is one of my favorite things ot draw and I see so many eye shots, many of them quite good, I never favorite them. THIS is an amazing rendition. The watery feeling is masterfully done. I bow to your alter. This is just supreme.

WHAT?!!!! That is a drawing?! I am speechless. I have seen alot of very detailed drawings by some amazing artists on this site but that surpasses them all. I have seen drawings that look like photographs but there has always been something that gives it away. This however, it is impossible to distinguish. The detail in the eye is breathtaking. The stuff around the pupil (I do not know it's name) is unbelieveable. The slight tears around the eyes. Amazing is all I can say.

Thank you and I am truly sorry for your loss. When my step dad died in my arms it was the saddest day in my life, and at the same time a strangely freeing moment It will always be part of me. Dealing with it in my art was cathartic and in a way he lives on.
