Description Monolithic update
Pencil on Illustration Board

Full drawing 30” x 40” this image 7” x 7”

This is the Second element in this drawing, the sky and bulb being the first.

This is a drawing of my step-fathers eye. An eye that’s seventy-eight years old, an eye akin to hammered gold. An eye that’s experienced prisoner of war camps and the death of many comrades. It’s been witness to beating cancer once and now in the dusk of his years to lung cancer. This symbol speaks of strength and vulnerability; it alludes to the end of one journey and the beginning of another.

(On December 5, 2005 my dear step-dad died in my arms, I will miss him so very much, Gods Speed to you Dad, and all my love always). Armin Mersmann

Thanks for looking

I didn't called you a liar or a fake artist...I just had a doubt, that's all...people has doubts, and they need an explication for everything...It seems that I'm one of those people(who makes artists suffer, and I'm really sorry about that, I don't mean to hurt you or call you a liar or something...)
I'm really sorry...................................I had much more to say, but I think, I'd better leave things as they are(that I'm an asshole, a sheep from the community, who called you indirectly a liar)
Apologize

I'm glad you excepted it And I'm also glad you like Death Magnetic, cause most people says that it doesn't have the well known Metallica sound...But that was the public opinion about the Load and ReLoad (the greatest album besides the Master of Puppets)too...so thanks...I'm enjoying it

First let’s clear the slate you are not a nobody, you’re just getting started that’s all- just like I had to, Ian Anderson had to and yes even James Hetfield. I don’t know about those two but I have moments of doubt but I have one chance in life and I am going to give it my all, I will not quit until I fall off my chair into the grave, and that will be a great life lived with gusto I might add.

You have so much in front of you, but it’s not free, forget about talent it’s a farce, it’s all about a great work ethic, passion is the key, and building your own personal artistic language, if you have these things and try for the most part to keep away from distractions (drugs, alcohol) you can make it Mandy. Also I want you to feel free to PM me anytime that you have questions about art and or just talk Metallica.

When I did a talk last week to the grad students at Baylor University I was asked by many why are you on DA? My answer: I am here to fly the flag of traditional drawing and give back what my mentors give me, simple as that.

Mandy Well that’s the thing I’ve been a big fan since the beginning I excepted and counted on them to grow and change they are artists not robots, look at Slayer the do the same stuff over and over , its good but it gets to be a bit tedious. I loved everything Metallica did, sure Master of Puppet was and is a masterpiece and Death Magnetic is as well, different but somehow even more artistically mature. I even liked St. Anger not as much as the rest of the work but it had some nice pissed off moments. The people that want them to rehash “Master” or Ride the Lighting well never get their wish, they grew, changed and looked ahead not behind a hallmark of a true artist. If the Beatles did the early stuff and not experimented with Sergeant Pepper, Revolver or the White Album, music would not be what it is today and believe me people bitched about them, “what happed the good stuff where are great songs like “I want to hold your hand” Metallica is metals Beatles along with Zeppelin another band that kept growing. On January 13 I have tickets to see Metallica for the 15th time and looking forward to it.

I do want to thank you for writing back with our little “decision” most just say well fuck you then and that’s that

Take care my friend

15th concert? God...this summer I was at my FIRST Metallica concert, am I felt that a dream came true, that I've praying for over 11 years...and when I saw them, I was shocked...They're so real, as you said, they are no robots, on the scene everything happened for the music and feelings. To bad, that nobody noticed this...everyone's expecting heavy from them...After the concert I thought that, after this one I can die quietly Anyway, I'm kind of jealous of your 15th concert. Also I think, that Metallica should be proud to have you on their concerts(for the 15th time).
It's funny how you said, that Metallica is metals Beatles, cause this summer I had a conversation with my Father, who's a biiig Beatles fun, and after a few hours of arguing, about, who's better, he said the same thing about Metallica. So tonight I've been impressed (in many ways)

Take care

Mandy
P.S.: I'll be watching you from now on, to catch your "four letter work ", if you're okay with that...wish you well

Mandy In the early days of Ride the Lighting I saw them mostly as a backup band for Ozzy and other bands, so most were a while ago. I’ve seen them three times in the last ten years. As much as Metallica is rated as major Thrash/Metal gurus I still think they are underrated by the music industry as a whole, and firmly believe that they are as important in what they have done for music as Zeppelin (who I also love).

About fifteen years ago Metallica was beaten out for the “hard rock” Grammy by Jethro Tull and it caused a huge stink and the leader of Jethro Tull got death threats and all kinds of abuse. The reason I bring this up Jethro Tull has been my muse since I was 19 and think very highly of them. The leader Ian Anderson own my work and we have spent many an evening having dinner and talking about my work, Tulls work and the thing with Metallica. He likes the band and their music and was perplexed at wining an award for hard rock, they refused even attend the ceremony. Tull is much more eclectic then Metallica a mixture of hard rock, folk, jazz classical anything goes and most Metallica fans hate Tull. I firmly believe their core creative power and the sense of timeing and complex ideas are present in both bands, I can’t say one is better the then other I do know this; I don’t go a day without listening tone or both of them. Just thought that was interesting.

If you ever want to listen to Tull their collection of music is huge 30 or more albums, the later stuff is hard to get into, but Aqualung, Thick as a Brick and Songs from the Wood are a good all around chose to give a listen to. It takes a few listens to get on board; they are really the fathers of progressive blues based rock, the “Tool” of their day.

PS life a pretty good thing, is been a hell of ride so far for me, by looking at your web site you seem very sad and disillusioned maybe I’m wrong and if I am I apologize. You can jump on life’s ride with gusto be an artist, create and kick ass or just let the negatives defeat you and eventually destroy you, it’s up to you my friend.

Armin, I just can't believe that you know the leader of the Jethro Tull...I've been listening to their music, but just a few songs, or albums...I think, it's time to get some more albums from them.
And the other unbelievable thing, is that you wrote me back again...I mean, I'm just a nobody and you're a person who know Ian Anderson well, but also care about nobodies like me...I have to say thank you for that...and for the kind words, from the PS. I've always wanted to be an artist somehow, but I just can't do it right...Somehow I see some meaninglessness in my life, cause I can't express myself as I want, but maybe it's just a temporal thing...And yes, I would like to jump on life's ride as you said...maybe I just need some time, to get use to and to get over some things in my past...some messed up things, and quickly but not wisely made decisions...I think I'm on the right way, to kick-ass as well, and to find my illusions back. Anyway, thank you for asking...( I still can't believe it, who am I talking to )
Thanks again, for the kind words...and take care
Yours sincerely,
Mandy

Ok your drawing is flawless, Are there any possible tips you could give me as to shading and how to make the light and dark patches so defined? I cant seem to make the areas contrast enough. Also how much of a difference does using an illustration board make?
