Description
Preciouspencil on paper
This is very experimental for me in a number of ways. For years I have worked with Photoshop at my job and used it for my drawings to see into shadows by the use of the curve tool. With this drawing I took an owl skull and tried to mimic the look of what it would like using this tool. I did use other images of old photos using the curve tool but not the owl, I wanted to have free reign to create and not be forced to just copy a Photoshoped image. This is a combination of positive and negative tones along with distortions of the hand and a blurry background with I normally don’t do. Not only was this drawing a completely different process it’s also very small of me (9" x 12")but its only small part of the presentation. I have built a “surround” out of wood that’s painted to resemble rust it’s all about nature taking back. When I have it all put together ill post it, but here is the drawing first. When done the whole presentation will be 32” x 36”.
Thanks for looking

I, too, use Photoshop to be able to see more shadows and highlights than I am able to by just looking at an untouched photo. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who realizes this!

I know this one. The experiment looks wicked, but it does not appeal to me personally. But I'm not understanding this message either, so sew me

This could be really lovely as a solarized photograph if you had the time... Excellent work. I really like your blend of realism and interpretation of the image.

Beautiful - when I first saw it I thought of solarization in the darkroom, actually - but the fact that its pencil is really amazing. Stunning job!

Congrats on the DD. This is definitely a "what is that?" piece that makes you sit and stare for a while until it all comes into focus

To be honest, I was at first going to dismiss this as a cheap 2 second photoshop "effect" by someone who discovered levels for the first time. But after reading the detailed description and realizing you did this by hand, I must give you props - you're pushing the limit on how you see the world around you, and how you report that vision through art. Very cool work.
I hope to see the final presentation as well!

I think I have to go farther with this; the image treated in this way would be better served as part a work. Here you have the surround without it I think it would be less but it’s an evolving concept.
Thanks

Beautiful, intricate work! I love the negative space around the outside of the hands, it frames the piece up well.

Your art never ceases to amaze me, for even your experimental projects always turn out wonderful. Although this is from my stand point, you probably see every flaw in it. I know I do for my art work.

I can't believe you came up with these type of negative lightning of the image.
Amazing! I'm glad I read your description, if not, I would've thought you made the effect in an editing program.

Keep this going if you can. Even though your previous work is very interesting in it's own right, this new direction is very appealing, especially in the realm of graphite art. Best of luck to you.

That looks good. After seeing some of your work, do you teach art somewhere? If you do, I wanna learn to do extreme details like you. I know practicing advice, but getting to your level might take quite a while.

I really admire this direction, especially that you let your eyes and hands distort the reference rather than photoshop. That right there is skill.
