Description Precious
pencil on paper

This is very experimental for me in a number of ways. For years I have worked with Photoshop at my job and used it for my drawings to see into shadows by the use of the curve tool. With this drawing I took an owl skull and tried to mimic the look of what it would like using this tool. I did use other images of old photos using the curve tool but not the owl, I wanted to have free reign to create and not be forced to just copy a Photoshoped image. This is a combination of positive and negative tones along with distortions of the hand and a blurry background with I normally don’t do. Not only was this drawing a completely different process it’s also very small of me (9" x 12")but its only small part of the presentation. I have built a “surround” out of wood that’s painted to resemble rust it’s all about nature taking back. When I have it all put together ill post it, but here is the drawing first. When done the whole presentation will be 32” x 36”.

Thanks for looking

I find it very disturbing. The black hole that is the eye is such a focal point for me but its so matte and empty compared to the hands and bone that seem so glossy and glowing. Nice job, can't look at it very long, but definitely interesting.

how interesting! did you use a photoshopped picture as reference or was this all from your mind?

I use Photoshoped pictures of other things to see how they look and then I just held up the owl scull and mimicked in my mind how it might look. On a regular drawing the tonality goes form 0 -10 ten being the darkest here it goes from 0-5 five being the darkest and then reverses form 6-10 but ten being a mid tone.

Fabulous Armin. At first I thought that you were now beginning to dabble with solarized B&W images (darkroom stuff). Another hat off to your incredible graphite wizardry. Why haven't you had an exhibition here in Sweden yet, or better yet at the Louisiana Museum in Denmark?

Europe needs to witness your graphite dexterity and ingenuity!

I'll just have to wait I guess.....

Suffice to say, amazingly intricate as usual

I have to say though that little sliver of negative space on the right of the thumb is creating a muted void.

imo, the piece could benefit from a SLIGHT cropping off the left and right edges. Perhaps the new found elongated format would somehow suggest a past and present--the owl's past ability to fly, and the present... well, you know.

Nevertheless, I love the subtle indication of detail on the tip of the thumb, and the back of the lower hand.

Great thinking, great ideas.. that space is so close to the edge I like the tension it brings to the work but it’s nice to see people really thinking and analyzing work. Thank you

No problem. Art is why I live.

I was worried you might be offended. Hahaha. I've never really done a crit on a professional artist.

wow armin. very dificult to work this image out, if i hadnt red tht this was an owl skull i wouldnt have known. i like the way the work features both contrasts, blackest to the whitest. it dosnt look like a pencil drawing at all, you have uniquely mixed in two very different images through which has evolved this whole unusual and unique strange and surreal style. i cant put my finger on any artist thats done something like this, a dam har thing to do in a world full of things which have already been done, u seem to have found a needle in a hystack, nice to see u experimenting though not my most favoured its got some very interesting qualties, well done armin mate, ps didnt want to just say love it, after all u are interested in our views cheers for the inspiration armin

You're usually so naturalistic and this is obviously very surreal.

It's two hands holding an owl skull. It looks strange because some of the shadows have been lightened to give it a more abstract or surreal feel.
