Description
StrippedGraphite on Illustration board
Final drawing will be 30” x 40” this is 8” x 8”
As far as the single elements this is the last major one, (two eyes, roots, crow and skulls) now it’s time to put it all together. Symbolically; the first eye is accusatory, it holds blame and makes the viewer part of the narrative. This eye looks into the past and the future, yet there is an apathetical aspect to its gaze, in the final version this should make more sense.
Thanks for the great comments and questions so far!

Not trying to rain on anyone parade, I have asked other artist friends this same question, if the drawing looks close to a photo why not just take a photo?
I think, beyond the first few attempts, the amount of time spent to make a perfect pencil reproduction could be better spent expanding ones portfolio in other directions, including quantity. Clearly there is immense talent here.

Scott, you’re not raining on my parade, this question is often asked.
The interpretation of observation comes in many ways, be it loose impressionistic, abstracted or tight realism no two view will be alike; the camera is in itself a distortion of reality. When I spend 400 hours exploring a face, constantly editing light, shadow, textures, and details. It’s this journey though the features, aging skin, and anatomy, a nexus of observations, my gut feelings and my concept that make me part of that persons psyche. Snapping a photo in a few seconds gives me what they “look” like on the surface but not really who they are.
This isn’t a portrait, but its still an exploration of humanity, textures and ideas that I control through every pencil stroke. A photo might give an appearance but wouldn’t give me the emotional and conceptual insight that drawing it does, after all I am in constant control I can negate, add, distort at every turn.
And of course there is the issue of craftsmanship, you can buy a coffee table at Wal-Mart, yet craftsman still loving build tables from fine wood, with unique designs and a passionate interaction of materials…. but then some like Wal-Mart trash just as well.
Thanks for the comment

wow... this is just, wow... It's so detailed and beautiful and I like how you made it into the eye that looks back and foreward (timewise speaking).. You capture so much emotion it brings the veiwer into the picture, if that makes any sense, but it's true!..

hmm have you ever tried "liquuid lead"? it's an airbrush form of graphite that creates hyper-real results, like your work now

I have seen it used in its wonderful but not for me, it just a little too slick like air brush work. For those who want to get that effect its marvelous I am so into imperfect skin this technique this would be counterproductive, as an udnerderdrawing for backgrounds this might work though, thank you for the heads up !
