Description Autism...as a fractal. The brain here is being struck by autism...the great noisy electric storm if you ask anyone with it. The colors represent the enormous deluge of conflicting sensations and the over stimulation resulting from it.

Apo.

---------

This fractal is an entry in CathARThis 3 Contest. Autism is a brain development disorder. There is no cure. The disorder impairs the individual's ability to socially interact and communicate. It can also include severely restricted interests and repetitive behavior, sometimes referred to as "stimming" or self-stimulatory behavior. It is one of five known Pervasive Developmental Disorders. The disorder is a spectrum disorder, with severity of the disability swinging in both intensity and type. No two individuals suffering from the disorder are exactly the same and, as such, the methods of therapy implemented must be tailored to the individual. Autism affects one child every twenty-one minutes everyday.

I have long wanted to do a piece on autism seeing as my family has dealt with it for the last six years. It has been a difficult journey but an incredibly rewarding one.

-------------------------------------------------

***IT WON!!! I'm happy to say that this piece won the deviantART CathARThis III contest. [link]

What the judges said:

^Katerina423: "The perfect embodiment of autism. That electrical storm. Autism is such a difficult and misunderstood illness and this helps the viewer gain a tangible grasp on what it must be like. That electrical storm. It's wonderful."

*killjoy: "i'm not given to enjoying fractals, but this is a dead-on representation of the autism spectrum, it's ordered chaos, and for most people with autism, there's a structure to it, something they do with a rigid order or pattern, but the pure chaos in the mind that creates this outward order is pure noise. i've to give this due credit, its just smart thinking to use a fractal."

$Moonbeam13: "I love this because it electrically displays the way the brain messages through this disorder. Using a fractal was brilliant in achieving the message."

Please don't call it an illness and please don't say they're suffering

The information provided BELOW the artist's comment was medically accurate for the year 2008 when this was posted. You are presuming both my opinion and personal experiences regarding autism via the inclusion of a medical explanation eleven years ago, and that the experiences of others with autism reflect your own. That is a gross and egocentric misrepresentation. I am certain there are those who resent the term"suffer", like you and even, yes, myself, and I apologize that my inclusion of a medical explanation provided by an outside source that is outdated by over a decade offends you personally, but there are also those who feel they absolutely have suffered as a result. You don't get to decide how others should feel about their autism any more than I do, which I will own. No one does. It's a personal experience. I will not discuss this further.

Hi! I'm sorry to ask you this, but I wanted your permission to use your image for a presentation about Autism... it's for school, I promise I'm not getting any profit with it, I just want people to be aware of autism.
Of course I'm gonna credit you!

As long as it is properly credited and for one-time, school-use only, and not used for commercial purposes (not even for a non profit charity). Thanks!

you're autistic? how can you type so well? how long did it take you? my little brother is autistic and we're still trying to communicate better with him, he gets tutors 5 days a week, but i want him to communicate whenever all the time

sweetieboom8cookiemo In reply to goldenBROWULF [2012-08-22 02:21:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, i have been diagnosed since kindergarten and in elementry school i learned to type on the keyboard. It takes a little longer on here since im using my ipad but i can type pretty quick without making much mistakes by computer without looking at the keyboard and people have said i was a good typer, and when i was young i went to this therapist where i was learning to talk and now i can fully talk. And that you said that you want your brother to communicate all the time but we have to learn to take our time to reach our goals such as i did when learning to talk. When i was younger, i really was more of a loner and didnt talk much but i still like to be alone sometimes.

Hi,
That struck me and I was staring at the monitor for I-dont-know-how-many seconds.
I wonder if I can use that in a small informative flyer -or better to say, a project proposal- that our organization (IIS - International Interaction Society, www.intersociety.net) will try to organize a meeting with an American percussionist's (Eddie Tuduri) visit along with a a-week-long program in different schools for kids with autism and other disabilities and present the program to a state agency.

Regards...

This represents autism so well. I'm autistic myself but wasn't diagnosed until I was 14, and have therefore learned to ignore and find ways to deal with my autistic traits. If I had been diagnosed earlier I would probably have been far less seemingly 'normal' than I am.
Anyways, this shows beautifully how the autistic brain connects some things with other that the normal brain doesn't. Also, how odd the autistic brain is.
Amazing job

Thank you so much I knew I wanted to do something to represent autism. I tried photography and drawing and then it hit me...there was nothing more logical than approaching it with a fractal. And I am really pleased with how it turned out. Thanks again!
