Description I had set aside yesterday and today to get outside and test out the various Tamron Adaptall lenses I've acquired on eBay recently, but the weather was against me (it's been quite windy) and my son has been quite sick, so instead I stayed home and shot a redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) that I caught at our local servo a few weeks ago. This was one of my favourite shots of her from today.

She's a beauty! I've got a couple of redbacks, they're fascinating pets!

It's quite enlightening to watch the way they build their webs, and how they subdue their prey after its initial entanglement. We have almost plague levels of these things here at the moment, but this is one of the biggest I've seen.

Weirdly though (in my experience), when I caught her, she wasn't anywhere near ground level, and her original web structure was against a vertical wall rather than a horizontal surface like they normally are. I guess they can improvise.

I did a heap more shots of her during this shoot, but I didn't want to spam them on DA, so they're all on my site at shannonivanwalters.com/photogr… (I also have an Instagram shot on there of how I got this photo to turn out the way it did).

Their webs are genious, I love the trapwire lines that run down the ground! I've found most of the ones around here near ground level, but they're real survivalists and will live almost anywhere I think

Thanks!

If by home spider you mean kinda like a pet, she's one out of 3 that I have currently. This one, a grey huntsman (that I haven't taken any pics of yet because I can't use my normal shooting setup for her, she can climb smooth surfaces too easily), and a tarantula . They are remarkable animals to watch.
