Description Nightmares are made of these.

This is one of numerous Black Widow spiders I have found around my house this particularly hot and dry summer. It is one of two well known poisonous spiders found in this area, the other being the Brown Recluse or Fiddle Back spider. Of the two, the Black Widow looks a lot more nasty and menacing looking due to it's intimidating jet black appearance and ominous red hour glass found under its abdomen. It's name is derived from it's reputation for consuming the male after breeding...

This was a little unnerving shooting macro with this thing roaming around inches away! I kept thinking it was going to jump into my lap and tell me what it wanted for Christmas!

That is freaking me the hell out. Great shot. Would not be game to do that with the red back spiders that I've found living in the shed.

Great photo! And I've read your lil' story behind with ... yes, with pleasure too
Do these creatures really jump? Or do they slowly move, especially when you sleep at night?
(Or do you never sleep since you've seen this o_O)
