Description
Oops...Hank, we overshot the target...Here it is! I've been wanting to construct this image for some time now and I finally produced it! It took me two attempts to get the mushroom cloud to look natural and not entirely constructed. I originally did not plan on making this image with anything necessarily in the foreground, however, last week I was able to take a panoramic picture of the freshly cut and bailed wheat field. After I pieced the panoramic picture together, I started thinking....hmmm, this might cool to use as the setting for my nuclear bomb mushroom cloud scene! That's when the idea popped in my head to make the hay bail a target and title it Atomic Redneck. At first I wasn't too crazy about placing the explosion in the center, but I like the balance it provides. As with a lot of intensive photo-manipulation, this was a good challenge, especially trying to create a cloud formation that carries similar lighting as the actual clouds in the picture. I guess if you are unwilling to challenge yourself, you will never experience growth.
Hope you enjoy and get a good chuckle!

I've actually seen one of these out in the desert backpacking. Have no idea where the old paper photograph is, these days, or if I still have it. Cool picture though.

Oh, jeeze. Someone tricked me into thinking this was an actual photo someone happened to get at exactly the right time. This is soooo cool.

very neat.. even though it would have been even more awesome if it was entirely a picture and not a "you-made" cloud.. great concept thought

Thanks! Does the the mushroom cloud blend well with the environment? I sometimes wonder if it truly looks natural since I've seen what it looks like without it...

Hahaha!
I think the polarizing filter I had on my lens helped with that.

This is really cool. I never would have known it was a manip if you hadn't said so.

The problem I have when I work on a manipulation is that I've seen the original...Which means, when I'm working on the image and after I'm finished, it always seems "fake" to me since I can't shake what the original looked like in my mind. I think that was the biggest inhibitor for me when working on this.

I see what you mean. I would probably be the same way, especially since I don't really have the patience to cut things out properly.

It's a circumstance of where I live and constantly trying to watch the skies. Since Oklahoma sits almost in the middle of multiple geographic areas, the weather can be pretty turbulent at times.

Great idea! And fantastic pulling it off, I had to check whether this was an actual photo or a photomanip.
