Description
This, so far, is probably my best lightning photograph. It's been a little bit of trial and error recently as I've tried to capture the night sky and storms, complete with lightning flashes. ~jayschwartz and I went out the other night a took some pictures of the swirling storms and the lightning they produced. It seemed like a strobe light bouncing all around us and at times almost made us cower to the ground in fear of being struck.I was fortunate enough to capture the point of origin of a lightning bolt as it broke out of the clouds and stretched out across the sky.

am I reading this right? Your shutter was open for 30 seconds? This is simply stunning. Your sky photography is beyond exceptional.

Nice shot my friend, consider it 'd
Just one question if you don't mind?.. What was the white balance setting if you recall?
Seems strange to have an cyan-colouring to a lightning photo? Somehow it works okay.
Take care and keep it up!

Thank you! I don't mind-I believe the white balance was 5500.
I had actually changed my white balance to give it more blues/cyans. I've re-uploaded the image at the original white balance. Take a look and let me know if you like it better.

The intensity is definitely far superior in this version.
I think I like the cyan one better now that I've seen the two? Choices, choices? lol
It's an amazing photo whichever way you look at it

That's gorgeous, I love the colour, the structure of the cloud, and the road trailing off into infinity. (So basically all of it, really.)

Yeah! I know that feeling well Makes you wonder if you're actually doing the right thing, but at the same time you feel more alive than you've ever felt when a bolt comes close or goes off right over your head
Awesome capture!

Thanks man! You should have seen us flinching at some of the lightning bolts out in the open...I'm sure it was humorous!

Ditto on Chunga. Metal camera + metal tripod + balls = this photo. Awesome capture.
Can you brighten the foreground a bit or is this the limit? I'd like to see it a taaaad brighter, but keep the vignetting. That's just me tho.

Thanks!
Since this was taken at night, that might be the limit on brightening the foreground without getting too much noise. I was able to get a little bit of illumination from the lightning, but not very much.

Yeah that's what I thought, especially at 1600 ISO. No matter tho, adds to the night-time ambiance of the photo, and some grittiness as well. Looks like something out of a "my car just broke down and my cell phone is not working" thriller movie.
Good job, lad.
