how do you chose your colours?

it's really a matter of experience i guess, but i mostly tend to think about the overall idea of the character im designing. If its a mage like this i use some toned down sepias and build it up with a one dominant color like those golden ornaments or the emerald crystals. Its hard for me to explain because i kinda feel what im going for, its really intuitive.
