Below: The first completed trailer cars, at Derby Litchurch Lane carriage works in June 1978. Seen here is a Driving Trailer Second, DTS, and two saloons. Classified 370, each set of six articulated trailer units is numbered. Hence this is one half of set 370 001. A complete 14 coach APT-P train has two sets of six, divided by the two centre power cars. Each set is formed of a driving trailer second, a trailer second, a trailer second restaurant buffet, a trailer unclassified (restaurant), a trailer first and a trailer brake first.

The codes being: DTS + TS+ TRSB+ TU+ TF + TBF. The power cars are coded simply: M, for non-driving motor. British Rail
reinforced pla One wall module incorporates the mirror, wash basin, soap dish, water spray and towel dispenser. This towel dispenser is concealed behind the mirror and a length of the roller towel is pulled down from a recess below the mirror, and is automatically retracted on a time switch. Even the toilet bowl and seat itself is in plastics, formed as a moulding projecting from the cabside wall. There is no discharge on to the tracks, because as already described, chemical retention tanks are fitted, and emptied at the depots.

Externally the APT-P is certainly eye- catching. Instead of the standard blue and grey 'Inter-City' livery, a special livery is metbogies, and there will be two power cars, one each end of the train, with driving accom- modation. Gone, because of expense or operating nuisance, are the ideas of articula tion, and the special hydrokinetic brakes which require special axles. It has been a lengthy and costly development programme, and one which still has to prove itself in the eyes of the public.

BR and its Chairman Sir Peter Parker remain confident, and I end with a quote from him: We must not allow a few clouds of pessisism to darken our horizon. Ride on the APT and you will have entered the modern age of railways'.
