I want to eventually build a steampunk rifle from scratch, but for now ill have to settle with modding toy guns

Thank you. unfortunately I wouldn't even know where to start doing scratch work, since I dont currently have any kind of skill on metal working, wood working or sculpting

A lot of the keys to scratchwork is seeing something in an everyday object and re-purposing it. Like a Clorox bottle or cheese grader. I go to yard sales and flea markets and buy old coffee pots and weird containers. Then greeblies to your hearts content. Keeping in mind there was NO coated wire, vacuum tubes, plastic hoses or lighted switches in the Victorian age!!

Fantastic work. I've been looking for tips on creating convincing wood (metal is easy-peasy)... any advice (since you obviously have a great technique)?

glad you like my work. As for the wood texture I'm afraid I cant be of much help. I've been unsuccessful in creating a decent looking wood. for this gun i used a flat black primer as a base and the spanish copper rub and buff and used it sparingly. it can kind of look like wood from far but its not very convincing up close. Sorry I wasnt much help.

It helps quite a bit, actually. Your woodwork looks pretty good at a distance, even a bit closer up, but it sure is a problem for me. I saw one modder use woodgrain shelf paper, but it only works for a few simple, smooth parts of a gun.
