Description
Slapped some colors on this: 3fangs.deviantart.com/art/Some…also colored an absolutely delightful version as well; it's deliciously yummy, and a lot more eye-soothing than the garish colors I chose. thejenjineer.deviantart.com/ar…
If you haven't listened to the first episode of Saffron and Peri yet, go do that! saffronandperi.tumblr.com/post…
And prepare for the 2nd one, coming out this Saturday--it's pretty groovy!

I can't get over how amazing those wings look! What was your inspiration? Butterflies? (totally stealing it next time I have to draw Saffron)

The funny thing was, I was just showing my sis the character references we have so far, and she started saying "it's a good thing Saffron's wings are so simple, at least that's something I'll be able to do" and then there's this awkward silence as I show her the wings I added to the line art and she just gives me one of those looks that say: "really? REALLY?" (I laughed long and hard.)
I think I used one of Fancy Fairy Wings and Things designs...
Turns out they have a neato Tumlrl that's great to go through for fairy "wing-spiration."

It's cool to be able to contrast the very different colouring styles you guys both have. I really like the border you've drawn, and the nice shine on her shoes and hair. Her wings look glorious as well!
One thing I'd suggest is to avoid using textured overlays over too much of the piece. It looks really natural on her belt and shoes, and also on her shirt, but add the skirt on top of those and it becomes a bit much. When I use texture overlays, I always try to make sure they're a feature on a small part of the image. (I'll often try to distort them around shapes to give the illusion of form, too, and prevent over-repetition.) I think the skirt would have worked better as a plain green, so as not to over complicate the piece and to better compliment the shirt and shoes.

Thank you!
Heh heh, to be honest, coloring has never been my favorite part of drawing--it's always the bit I end up least satisfied with. My soft shading always comes out as a disappointment, I'm too lazy to try something nice and "painterly", and sometimes my flat colors come out so bright and garish even I wince.
Annnd yet that doesn't stop me from doing it.
I'm sorely sorely tempted to make TheJenjineer my sole colorist, and ONLY color things when I "feel like it" or need to kill a bit of time. (I had more fun coloring this one, since I knew she'd already given me a beautiful piece of art and there was no pressure on ME to come up with something stunning.)
I think you're right about the skirt--I tend to go overboard when I start adding textures.
Normally I don't work with them, so I end up going a little crazy.
I tried what you said, and posted it for comparison over on tumblr: mecha-nations.tumblr.com/post/…
You're completely right about about the plain green complimenting the shirt and shoes. Thank you!

This is super messy, but here:
This is a trick I use a lot in my own paintings - choosing one 'shadow' colour, usually something from the background, and using it on everything with minor adaptations where it clashes. (For example, I desaturated it on her skin and made it way more green on her skirt. I usually use the eyedropper tool over a low-opacity stroke to get those alterations.)
Same with the highlights. I just grabbed the orange from the background and splashed it places.
Another neat thing I didn't do, but would also add to the effect - using some of the dark green from the skirt as a 'deep shadow' colour in places, to add even more depth and make that colour less isolated.
I love using oil-like brushes and going paint-style, but the same theory holds with cell shading.

Aw, that's a really neato coloring tutorial, thanks for the link!
(I have a love for collecting tutorials. It's always cool to see an artist at work.)
And whhoooaaaa, even though it's messy, the shading example you did on Saffron looks amazing! Those messy brush strokes give it an awesome sense of texture and painterly style--I really like the glimpse into your coloring method. You have such a lovely grasp of color (and how to use oil-like brushes for giving texture and that painterly vibe), it's already giving me some ideas on some new things I want to try...Thank you for the kind words and inspiration, I'm actually feeling somewhat excited for my own next coloring attempt. I think I'll try to be a little more adventurous, and use some of the watercolor/oil brushes I've collected (yet rarely used). I feel like going a little wild and experimental, I think.
Thanks again!

No worries, I was about to claim that I was lucky and that colour always came fairly naturally to me... and then I checked some of my old DeviantART accounts to make sure, and nope. No, somewhere along the line I did learn how it worked because before that point, I was pretty bad. Anyway, my point is - don't stop trying! Colours are my favourite part of my own drawing process, because it's the bit where I get to take the large smushy oil-like brushes and go SPLABLAH over everything. (Then tidy it up into a coherent piece...)
I think I developed a bit of sense of what colours go together in terms of creating a palette by myself, but I specifically remember one tutorial which really cleared up how to choose the right colours to shade with and how to make a piece look 'unified'. It's very old now and is certainly missing some stuff, but I'd still highly recommend checking it out and trying some of the experiments on it. I'll link to it at the bottom.
I'll do a super-quick-and-messy paintover of Saffron here to show you how you could unify the colours you've chosen here a tad more and pop it into Stash. Someone did the same for me a couple of weeks ago.
