ProjectComment is a Group of many projects centred around comments, but, more importantly, constructive comments. Every week, one admin from ProjectComment will write an informative article on commenting that will hopefully be useful to you! Please help support us by the article and contribute your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Many artists on deviantART would like to receive comments on their pieces, but there are certain ways of going about it. This article will list some of the ways that will hinder you and the ways that will support your efforts in getting comments. Although this list is by no means comprehensive and you may disagree with some things, we hope that it will aid in your endeavours, regardless.

Actions that are
Posting on Group or Profile Pages
It does not matter what group or profile page you visit, if you post a comment asking for people to give feedback on your art, it is unlikely that people will do so, especially if the group or person encounter these types of comments frequently. Although this is a form of putting yourself out there in the community, it also suggests laziness in that you expect people to come to you (when they have little incentive) instead of the reverse. It would be better to seek a more active approach to getting feedback, as opposed to just leaving comments akin to spam.

Passive Approach
A lot of people need to put a lot of time and effort into getting themselves seen in the community. It is not enough to upload your art and expect people to come flocking to you. Because this community is so huge, it is easy to have your art towed under all the other pieces of art out there. This means that one must do more to get more exposure. These methods will be explained later in this article.

Being Self-Centred
If it's all about 'me', 'me', 'me', it's unlikely that you'll get far. Commenting and the community work best by receiving comments as well as giving comments. If everyone just wanted to get comments, nobody would give them and the balance would be tipped. If a person actively watches you and comments on your art often, consider expressing your appreciation so that their efforts are recognised if you are not already doing so. If a person keeps giving and giving without receiving much in return, be it recognition, comments, etc. they may lose the motivation to continue supporting you.

Actions that are
Invest and Explore
If you want to be involved in a group or you want to get comments, take the time to explore what it's all about, what projects there are, what systems they have in place and more. Instead of posting on a page requesting people to come to you, discover what is already there for you to seize. In terms of ProjectComment in particular, there are systems and projects in place ready for you to use:
Targeted Comments ~ Get your questions answered by linking your art to get comments that are more driven and focused for you.

Comment Thread & Comment Tag ~ Games where every comment given means a comment received.
Commenter System ~ Request a comment on any deviation you like, no limitations.
Overall, invest your time and effort into the things you come across and, in return, other people will invest their time and effort in you.

Active Approach
As stated, it takes a lot of time and effort to be seen and to get comments on your art. However, if you integrate yourself in the community, this will be easier.

Consider doing the following:
Joining :devgroups: either as an admin or member, and taking part in their projects and contests. Submit to the group's gallery and favourites to showcase your art and achieve more exposure overall.
Post in the Premium Thumbshare Forum and the Thumbshare Forum to give and get comments, and, more importantly, share thumbs of your artwork.
Join chat events or participate in chat where you may be able to share your work. ProjectComment is hosting a chat event dedicated to commenting on your art this week, as announced here .
If you take a more active approach in getting comments and you integrate yourself in the community as well, you'll be doing something towards getting comments rather than sitting back and waiting for people to come to you.

If you want to go one step further, perhaps you could host a project or a contest yourself, or even post news articles featuring the artworks of others.

Having Fun
Take part in things for their own sake and have fun. Instead of going just to the Thumbshare Forum , for example, perhaps you could visit other Forums and post there as well. Jump into conversations, interact with others, and enjoy yourselves. Form friendships so that you have people willing to support you for a long time to come and take a step back from getting and giving constructive comments. In some ways, it's better to take things as they are and to not come off as a person who is only concerned about comments and exposure.

These things are pretty much well known to a lot of us, but they form a good, solid foundation that many can relate with.
