No Ash vs N, just a difference in opinion
Mostly N with Zoroark-like speed steals the Light Stone (it is him though) in order to stop Reshiram causing havoc like it did the last time N saw it, Ash followed him but started falling through the floor, N tried to help but started falling him himself
he lets go of the case holding the Light Stone to save Ash from falling but can't hold on.
Trapped in the lower depth of the ruins with the Stone, Ash and N mostly sit and talk about stuff (i dunno what because i only see screenshots) N gets disheartened but Ash motivates him and then they both hear TP attacking

It's not so much the fact that Ash doesn't age as it's the fact that he doesn't learn from the countless mistakes he makes and, as such, keeps repeating them over and over again. It's true that he's beaten the Orange League and the Battle Frontier, but that's pretty much all he's achieved; not exactly impressive for someone who wants to be a "Pokemon Master." They haven't even given a reason why he hasn't attempted to try again in the leagues he's failed in.
