(aka Part 2 to Almost Midnight.)

Back in the car they rode in silence for several minutes before Johnnie's curiosity broke through.
"Why did you kiss me?"
The immediate response was more of a mental then physical shrug.
"It seemed like the right thing to do."
Johnnie chewed on his bottom lip before asking the obvious question.
"What about your girl?"
Nick snorted and Johnnie inwardly cringed at the rise of unspoken emotions that seemed to fill the car.
"We broke up."
Johnnie frowned and spared a quick glance toward his passenger.
Nick was staring straight ahead as he continued without being prompted.
"Apparently she didn't want to break up before christmas so she waited until the day after."
Johnnie cringed visibly and started to appologize.
Nicky cut him off.
"Don't." he said curtly then softened with a half hearted grin in his direction.
"I got wasted, wrote a song and I'm ok."
Johnnie nodded, looking back to the road.
"Jezebel-"
"-in Black Boots?" Nick finished for him, confirming with a sharp edge in his voice.  "Yeah."
They drove for a few more minutes in silence before Johnnie asked doubtfully.
"You really okay?"
Nick's laugh wasn't a completely happy one.
"Well no, but I will be.  Eventually."
Johnnie nodded again, accepting that answer more.
"It is wrong I want to hug you right now?"
Nick's soft laughter held less bitterness this time.
"Nah.  Not wrong at all.  After all I kissed you.  You're absolutely allowed a hug."
Johnnie grinned and forcused on driving.  Nick sat back, taking a moment to enjoy the brief flush on his new friend's cheeks.
