Description
After spending time with Jack writing and playing, Nick glanced at his watch and started to pack up."So, tomorrow night?" Jack asked. He had invited him to come over, hangout with the band and practice their song.
Nick nodded packing up his guitar into its case. He stacked the music sheets but left them on the coffee table. Jack said he'd make copies.
"That's the plan."
Nick glanced at his watch again.
"Speaking of which, can I bother you for Johnnie's number?"
Jack raised an eyebrow.
Nick made a small uncommitted motion.
"With everything that happened that night, I got yours and Jimmie's but not his."
Jack smirked.
"Too distracted?
Nick grinned lopsidedly.
"Something like that, yeah."
Jack waved his hand towards the phone on the counter and Nick helped himself, copying it to his own phone.
One last thanks, and guitar case in hand, Nick headed out the apartment to the elevator.
Once inside he made the call.
Johnnie answered cautiously not recognizing the number but Nick could hear the smile in his voice once he realized who it was. He told him he had been back in town a few days an extra ticket to the movies tonight and asked if Johnnie would like to join him. Maybe afterward they could grab a bite or share a coffee.
Johnnie laughed and said he'd be delighted to. Nick told him the time to meet and they hung up.
Nick walked into the parking garage giving his guest ticket to the parking attendant. Then he called the movie theater to purchase the tickets.
Turned out the movie sucked but the company was good. Afterwards they walked to a nearby coffee shop. They talked about the movie, other bad movies, their favorite movies, their work, Nick's music and Johnnie's sculptures. Nick made sure Johnnie had his number before they walked back to the cinema parking lot.
Arriving at his car, Johnnie used his keys to unlock the door but turned back to Nick without opening it.
"You need a ride?"
Nick grinned.
"Nah. Got my bike."
Johnnie looked down at the cement at his feet. They had had a great evening together but now Johnnie was suddenly uncomfortable. He grinned at his penny loafers and Nick's boots. They were so opposite. He looked up to say as much but was silenced by the tender touch of Nick's lips on his.
His hands went to Nick's waist as Nick's gently cupped his face.
When they finally broke away neither was breathing steadily.
"Call me," Nick muttered with a slight grin and one last brush of his lips against Johnnie's before he turned and walked away.
Johnnie stayed there for several minutes watching him go. A slight smile tugged at his lips. He could practically hear Jimmie in his head. Hate to watch you go but love to watch you leave.
He sighed softly as he turned back to his car; a sly adjustment and got in his car and headed home.
