I use canvas size. Programmed as a ps action to increase the border by 6px at a time. if i want a bigger border, i click it once more, and more and more.

Personally I use the pencil tool around the outside for 1 px, gotta try your way

Or you could just use a pencil. Do black all around, then a lighter color that would match the background, and then another black all around.
