Another reimagined mad god from the Maya/Aztec pantheon, the Crocodile Cephalopod God: Cipactli. I imagine this subaqueous beast as a custodian of the mythical Mesoamerican city of Aztlan.

Very enjoyable piece! I love how the temple in the background looks very organic and almost alive, while the guardian seems very ancient, but also as if it could be a stone statue.

I like the use of colour in this and like how the background temple is quite dark and mysterious in comparison to the deity which is quite bold and draws your attention. Its also nice how the crocodile merges into almost liquid like tendrils at the end, really nice and atmospheric!

That's pretty usual for me. I always have a pretty clear central idea, but I end up having to fill in the background as I go. And, as you said, I also sometimes find interesting new design ideas that spill over into other artwork when I do that.
