Description This is my entry for the Aliens/Predator versus Fantasy Creatures contest at #avpalternative . I created the work with pen and ink, watercolor and colored pencil. It took me about twelve hours to color, but I didn't color it all in one sitting!

I'd had an idea or two for Predator versus the Cthulhu Mythos floating around in my head for quite a while - ever since I drew up a zany doodle during the commencement speech for CMSU's 2001 graduating class. For this final image I made a few adjustments - it's *slightly* less silly, but not by much. Something that always struck me about the BEM's - the Bug-Eyed Monsters - of 1920's and 1930's weird fiction is that although they do horrible things to the story heroes, they look patently ridiculous. I tried to bring some of that "horrible, yet silly" feeling into this picture, while still making the creature look like it would be a worthy challenge for our Predator hero.

Oh, and for the curious: The Predator is named Khan'nai Amphede-ui'puande. He's Chaunn's dad.

The man was a genius. Clark Ashton Smith is another good one that you might like - he was one of HPL's friends and wrote about similarly strange stuff.

Thank you very much. I really like working with traditional mediums like this, and colored pencils are my favorite tools for this kind of work.

LOL - Yes, thank you, definitely high on the pointy-things scale. But I think now that this pic is too happy for a Mythos tribute. I shall have to take another running leap at this theme with a more subdued palette.

In tumbnail I first thought it was a digital coloring but to see this coloring skill with traditional tools is really amazing ... also great to see how you made them battling each other .... very nice!!!!!

Thank you muchly. I think I take some of my coloring effects from my observations of digitally-produced lighting schemes, but I just like the feel of coloring with pencils and watercolor so much that I tend to stick with traditional mediums. Glad you like this silly thing!
