Description Finally, finally finished! This is by far the most ambitious Predator project I've done. There's stuff that still doesn't *quite* work for me - mostly the fact that the tentacle mass confuses the flow of the picture. That, I fear, is a problem only solved through experience.

This is one of the last request pieces I'm doing. It's experimental and so serves its own purpose, but it uses a couple of Predator characters belonging to my friend ~yen-ta , with his permission.

I assure you that there is a story behind this piece. One of these days I plan to write it out, but in the meantime I'll leave you to wonder...

I used ink and Prismacolor pencils on this. It's 14x17 inches and it took me nigh-on 80 hours to complete.

This is amazing! Really, for the activity of the picture, there's not as much confusion as one would think, probably because of the color choice. The only confusing part is the red Yautja-- are those wings behind him and are they his? O_O That's too cool!

I still think those squirrely tentacles got away from me, and that I could have used their shapes as compositional guides a bit more effectively. This was a good learning project in that sense. It's never a good idea for the *artist* to get lost in a tangled composotion!

Yes, the red guy has wings. He has better control of them here than he ever will in any other circumstances. His characterizations were still in their nascent stage when I drew this picture.

Totally super-awesome shitzu, I agree. I will have to tackle another project like this one day. This was the first time I tried to squash this many characters (and tentacles) into one picture, and I've learned more about big character compositions since I finished up this thing.

Yautja vs Eldritch Abominations! There's gonna be Calamari tonight! Heh heh heh!

I don't think I've commented on this piece either, but I definitely remember an older version of this. I also remember the eight armed Yautja. And as some have said, sure, he may remind some of the four armed Predator from the PREDATORS sequel comic but I sure as know for heck he doesn't remind me of that... THING... So the multi-armed Yautja is cool in my book.

It's been a long, long time since I finished this one; this is the original finished version that I posted. It's just that there's another Predator group, and I can't resist the urge to show off...

The four-armed guy could have worked if they'd done ANYTHING in the way of backstory! But no, we're just going to dump a load of new crap onto the hapless humans in the story, we're going to turn the canon on its ear, la-dee-da. Losers and fools, bah. I'll stick with the good stuff in my comic book box, and I'll keep making up my own stories based on the characters the way I like to think of 'em. Which is what most of us do anyway.

The sad part about the sequel comics is that Rodriguez and Antal came up with that stuff and worked with Dark Horse. And what's even more sad is that PREDATORS has a confirmed sequel, and knowing Rodriguez based off his original 1994 draft, and his ideas for the current movie, and his ideas for the comic... I don't look forward to the future of the Predator franchise.

rachaelm5 In reply to RakaiThwei [2010-09-13 23:10:14 +0000 UTC]

Sad-LOL... Yes, the future of the franchise shall be summarily ignored by most of us old-school types. What worries me is that the younger crowd may eat this stuff up, and THEN where are we? Fandom warfare, that's where!

RakaiThwei In reply to rachaelm5 [2010-09-13 23:39:36 +0000 UTC]

We already are there if you ask me.

Sad thing is, Fox says everything is canon, including the god-awful Hish mythos.. and knowing that Ridley Scott is doing the Alien prequel off of the John Spaight's script... God..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to RakaiThwei [2010-09-14 01:19:38 +0000 UTC]

Even the gods-forsaken *hish* are being considered? That's just pitiful. While John Shirly's ignorance (concerning the... yautja-like creatures in Forever Midnight) was understandable, it really wasn't excusable on the part of Fox to consider them as canon character types. The mutable hemaphrodite thing is just too far out there for this species, and it flies in the face of everything that came before. It's CLASSIC John Shirly; I've read some of his other stuff, and he's way, way out there 100% of the time. But it doesn't fit the Predator universe, particularly in light of what Steve and Stephanie Perry started us off with in the Prey novel. While the hish aspect of the Predator universe amuses me, I will not ever consider them canon, except as the butt of jokes, or the miscegantion of crazy outer gods like the ones in the Cthulhu mythos. If I take that view of them, then I can send Chaunn's dad out to kill 'em. Heh.

Right, right, looking for the silver lining in this. As long as they don't attempt to introduce the gender-changing thing in the movies, I think I can just shake my head and go on dreaming of the glory days.

RakaiThwei In reply to rachaelm5 [2010-09-14 01:50:52 +0000 UTC]

See that's the thing with Fox, they don't give a rat's ass about continuity at all, they are aware of the expanded universe material and they keep an eye on it but not close an eye enough to care like say LucasFilm's EU for Star Wars, but never the less, and their official stance on it is: "If it has Twentieth Century Fox's seal on it, it's canon." even if it does contradict the established continuity. And get this, apparently, NECA Toys PREDATOR series has in-universe backstories for the Super Predator clan, and it somehow ties in with AvP when Rodriguez has explicitly stated PREDATORS is the "real" sequel to Predator, ignoring Predator 2, AvP, and AvP-R... What the hell...

If PREDATORS has nothing to do with AvP, why make backstories involving the term "Yautja" (Fox has officially canonized this in the films for AvP-R's Blu-Ray and PREDATORS Blu-Ray) and mentioning the Xenomorphs.. Something's got to give.

As far as Yautja vs Hish goes... PREDATORS kind of does that. It turns out that there are two different species of Predators and they're at some sort of blood war against each other, and according to a German magazine interview with Antal and Rodriguez, these Super Predators are infact Bad Bloods, and it is implied the "preserve planet" is where Predators send their Outcaste. And Nolan, in the film, even says: "See, there are two kinds of 'em out there, like dogs and wolves. The bigger ones hunt the smaller ones. They're fighting each other out there. There's a blood feud."

Seriously... the whole... thing just screams Yautja vs Hish, and Fox doesn't care where this franchise goes anymore in the hands of the man who made those god-awful Spy Kids movies.

You... you don't like Setg'in-de' paya Mni'awusthe...? *big teary eyes*

LOL - Actually, this was a really early design for the big red god. I kept his eight arms (I was thinking of Hindu gods rather than Goro from Mortal Kombat) and gave him a bunch more eyes, and I've made the wing-things massively different in order to make him a more alien entity. He smiles more these days, too. Have you ever seen a Predator with a Big Cheezy Grin? SCARY AS HELL.

after seeing one of the Predators comics-i think the sequel to the new movie(art was soo bad that it is hard to desribe.) There was a Pred with Four arms that looked soo terrible ...tjhe whole story of it was really really bad...to think of it now-I think they never watched any of the movies before making the comics-it was worse than anderson based avp comics-and this is why i dislike more than two armed preds i think.
But still-this is one of the most amazing works i ever saw-simply beautifull.

rachaelm5 In reply to Bender18 [2010-09-13 19:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that was some pretty sad art, but it's still not as bad as some of the latter-day Predator comics from just before the first AvP movie/travesty (re Predator: Homeworld - may Tony Cypress' artistic ability Rot In Hell). And the sequel story made me wonder... What, they've got some kind of hot genetic-engineering program going on? What's up with the four-armed guy, and giving a lowly human a set of armor? Where was the cultural evidence for either of those?! Just... curve-balls right and left. Irritating. I'll stick with the older comics for health and sanity. The novel South China Sea is also a very good story - definitely a different take on Predator, but more in keeping with the spirit of the first movie.

Oh, and if it's any consolation, my eight-armed monstrosity pre-dates the Predators sequel by several years. Like I said, I based my design on Hindu gods more than anything else.

i know it is older than this sh##it from the comics-and definetely looks better
Predator: Homeworld-Yeah-I remember reading something like that" two predator tribes fight with each other and something something"-but after looking on the first couple of pages...well...i just couldnt read this shit, other terrible art is win...I dunno the title but hmm..Predator-captive maybe? some scientist captured pred, cutted his arm with self destruck device-pred hunted using his bare hand-with claws-probably 1metter long-story was really decent and pleasurable to read-but the art...it is on the level of Homeworld.

Yeah, I just don't know what happened. Chris Warner went on to other stuff back in the early nineties, and after that it was all downhill. The original Concrete Jungle series, Cold War, and Dark River were among the best done for the Predator universe (though I think another penciler or inker got in on the second and third). Some of the other Predator versus so-and-so had good art. The first Batman vs Predator had both excellent story AND art, and it's what really pulled me into both universes back in the day. Predator vs Magnus Robot Fighter, though I'd never heard of Magnus, was very good. Lee Weeks did the art, and it was outstanding. Lee also did the art for Tarzan vs Predator at the Earth's Core - sounds silly, yes, but it was another excellent story with excellent art. Superman vs Predator was surprisingly good (I'm not a big fan of Supes, but the drawing was wonderful). Predator: Hell and Hot Water was amazingly well-drawn, though the story was only so-so. Aliens: Apocalypse Angel, drawn by the same guy, had a better story as well as bodacious art. Um... I know there are a few others. I'd have to go dig through my big box of comics, but if you want I can throw you a list of The Good Stuff if you don't already have most of it.

Bender18 In reply to rachaelm5 [2010-09-14 08:11:41 +0000 UTC]

I know all of them-Apocalypse angels-story was nice,butr the art...jawdropping.
Alien/s:Labirint-great story and wonderfull art.
I dont remember the title of it-it was maybe 10 pages long.Story is-some boy
(captured) is helping some nazi soldies with finding a cave with treasure in it. They finde it,but they also finde in it a predator who seriously kick some ass-story was really nice-shor but good-no dialogue. But the art...best Predator art in my opinion.black and white.I found the title-Predator: Demon's Gold by Ron Marz and Claudio Castellini(cover- [link] )
Judge Dredd vs Predator has great art and story.
Predator: Strange Roux the same.
I didnt know that Rodriguez and Antal were involved in comics...ehh..true fans will know shit from something decent. But it angers me that hollywood still rapes iconic characters. I dont have any hopes about "The Thing" prequel:/

Setg'in-de' paya Mni'awusthe is the God of Swiftly Striking Lightning, imagination, and smooth dance moves. He's not one of the especially serious ones. I mean, honestly. Smooth dance moves? Where was he when they were handing out Powers? Er, actually, the historians know EXACTLY where he was. On the celestial chamber pot, recovering from an all-decade bender.

This isn't even a good picture of the ol' muffin... (But this is! I'm all puffed up and pleased with it and have to SHARE IT with any willing victim! --> [link] ) I've reworked him a bit since World Cancer, though I still have to tuck him neatly into an actual storyline. He's one of those characters that I like too much to set aside, but need just the right spot in my plot to make such a goofy character work. You know how it is.

Oh dear. Now you've got my fannish tendency to babble about original characters all out in the open. Been a fan-girl for too long, I suppose.
