Description Trade-in-progress for

Here's a bit more progress on the Predator Jam Session. I tend to work one character at a time, shadows to highlights, then I tackle the next character.

Ink, watercolor wash, Prismacolor pencils.

Looking great so far (as always)... but I will not deny that I squeed when I saw Yikyik.

I have been meaning to get Yikyik down on paper with a proper color scheme for *ages*. I may lessen the boldness of its stripes in future revisions, but this is close to what I see in my mind's eye.

This work is trully Epic, theme is unusual-in my opinion considering predator character/s,details are amazing, coloring is mindblowing...this should win something somewhere

Thanks very much!

I see many Predators hunting and killing, so I like to make pictures that show other aspects of their culture. To think of a group of Predator friends sitting down to play their musical instruments is just... amusing! ...Because it is so unlike the normal Predator that we see.

LOL - I was actually thinking more of a get-together of old friends. My family and friends do this kind of jam session occasionally - most of my immediates are musically inclined, and after the recital, they tend to jam.

Incidentally, though, I did model the two drummers after an earlier drawing I did which *was* meant to be a Predator ritual dance.

I was wondering how on earth you can put this much details in one drawing, then I saw the thumbnail of the other WIP you've posted and remembered that it's 12X18...

The patterns and design of their musical instruments are fantastic!

Thank you!

That is one of the drawbacks of Prismacolor pencils. I cannot work much smaller than 6x9 inches comfortably, because the soft-lead pencils just will not hold a point for very long. I did try an ACEO with Prisma Premiers, but that was an exercise in frustration. So yes, bigger is better! It leaves me lots of room to blend colors around and simulate textures and stuff.

You're welcome, Rachael!

Ah, I forgot about how soft they are. So I guess it's easier working on bigger pieces... but it must take for a long time to colour 12X18 picture!!

Yes, it does take quite a while - there will probably be about 80 hours in this picture by the time I'm finished.

Oh goody! I really like the contrast between the character colors here, Kiit'du really stands out!

So excited!

That's something that always amazed and amused me about Predators - there's so much variety, through very nearly the whole spectrum of colors. Not just "skin tones" like humans, but bright red and light blue and burning green, and everything in between. ...Although I don't think I've seen a purple Predator yet. I might have to fix that.

I'm glad you're pleased with the progress. I aim to have this thing finished this week!

These teasing give-aways of your progress are enough to make me go in awe.
If there were such a thing, I am sure this would win an award among the Yaut'ja/Predator community.

Thanks very much!

I post the work-in-progress pictures for Sporkey, so that she knows I haven't forgotten her art trade because I'm working so slowly.

I may bring this piece to one of my local "normal" art shows just to see what all of the old ladies think of my musical monsters.

Aye, maybe. But the wait is certainly worth it.

Awesome, I look forward to hear out how that goes.
