This is my half of a trade with . She just wanted a couple of our characters interacting, but as usual I decided to turn the project into a tour de force in order to challenge myself....And boy has it been a challenge. Once I started coloring this beast of a picture, I realized that I'd come as close as I've ever been to biting off more than I can chew. That just means I need to take my time chewing through it, hence the long, long time between updates. I thought that since Sporkey has been waiting so patiently, I'd go ahead and post a work-in-progress so that she can see that I haven't forgotten her amidst my gigantic pile of other stuff.
Prismacolor pencils over watercolor and ink.

I suspect that people are waiting for me to get my butt in gear and finish all of the coloring.
Thanks very much! There will be some more colors to balance out Khan's bright robe; I realize that the deep blue is a very dominant color right now. I still love what you did for him, and I will probably use that design forever.

I see so many of the *proper* Hunters and Killers that I have to hare off in a different direction fairly often just to explore other facets of my favorite monsters' society.

I did the same with xenomorphs.
It would make sense that the preds would have a rich culture outside of killing. The instruments are very inventive too.

The regular hunters could, certainly, but this bunch is comprised mostly of hunters-of-other-stuff.

You're very welcome! I think monsters are often beautiful creatures, but surely a tough subject to draw/paint because they are imaginary creatures. You must have great imaginations, Rachael. It looks like quite intense colouring work, though!!

Actually, this is a really mixed bag of characters. One's a criminal investigator. One's a Cthulhian monster killer. One's an anthropologist. One's a reformed Bad Blood. One's a snarky matriarch. You get the idea - it takes more than hunters to hold a culture together.

I've always thought there was more to them than hunting. The very first of the Aliens vs Predator comics back in the mid-nineties gave us a glimpse of the guys' culture that surrounded the Hunt - dealing with the unblooded youngsters, mostly, but also with interactions with humans that illustrated honorable and dishonorable behavior, and something dangerously close to a friendship between Machiko Naguchi and the broken-tusked warrior. In that one story we saw that they had the potential to be a lot more than mere movie monsters.

I think most movie monsters have the potential to be more then just movie monsters, watching the first predator movie, make the Yautja look rather big and evil, then we learn more about their culture, and that changes most people's deception on them.
