Description This is my half of a trade with . She just wanted a couple of our characters interacting, but as usual I decided to turn the project into a tour de force in order to challenge myself. She's been very, VERY patiently waiting for me to get the stuff out of my head and down on paper.

Wanna know who's making all that noise...? I mean besides the guys on percussion instruments. They get going and they just kind of take over for a while. Once they tire themselves out, the rest of the musicians can chime back in.

........................

Foreground left with the long, thin instrument is my character Chaunn'tne-di.

Behind Chaunn on the mandolin is Khan'nai, her dad (with especial thanks (again) to Fiji-Fujii for Khan's new design).

Behind those two on the left, playing the sticks and the two long horns are just some random guys.

Center foreground on the harp is Madam-Sparkz 's character Sar'idikk.

Directly behind Sari on the double-drum is her big, tough buddy Kiit'du.

On the tambourine is my scholarly character Bak'udrin-de.

Behind the guys on the maracas is an old friend, yen-ta .

Behind Baku, seated with the cowbell is another random guy. Honestly, I needed more cowbell.

On the right with the wrap-around horn is peanutchan 's matriarch, Tituga. I hope P-chan forgives me for not drawing Tituga in a bikini... I like drawing armor!

The flautist behind Tituga is another random lady.

Oh, and the fuzzball at Sari's feet is a pfaukal called Yikyik. It's the Predator equivalent of a housecat, and Baku belongs to it. Naturally.

.................................

...Yes, I did think about the mouthpieces for the various wind-powered instruments. The tissues within the inner jaws of a Predator form a sphincter similar to the way human lips do. With a little bit of adjustment to the mouthpieces, I think a Predator could play instruments like flutes, trumpets, and tubas. Reed instruments like clarinets and saxophones would require some considerably different engineering, and I haven't actually featured any of them here. That long, thin thing that Chaunn plays is more like a recorder or Flute-o-Phone with a "trumpet" mouthpiece.

I am proud to say that I survived the linework process, so now we get to see if I can manage to get this beast colored. It's going to take some time; at 12x18 inches, this is not a small drawing.

Color work-in-progress:

LOL - Because there's a good bit of African rhythm that goes through my head when I'm drawing them. The instrument designs are somewhat African as well, at least for the drums.

The Yautja/Predator creature is originally from the 1987 Predator movie. There were many comic books with Predator, and also some novels. The word "Yautja" is from one of the novels; it has never been called Yautja in the movies. I have enjoyed the Predator's Hunter culture for many years, ever since I read the comic books. I like the look of the species, with the mandibles around the mouth. I also like the different designs of their armor and weapons, so I do a lot of Predator drawings just for armor and weapons. I also like to think about the other aspects of Predator culture, such as music and dance. There are not very many people who play with this idea!

Oh wow, you must have a fun time doing details or else I can't think of any other way you'd bare going through all of this.

But this looks great, I also like Yikyik, the Pfaukal. I'd like to get to know more about the fauna you've created as pets for the Yaut'ja.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to XenoPredDragon [2011-11-15 01:04:43 +0000 UTC]

LOL - Even though the details take a long time, I do enjoy drawing all of them.

Yikyik is the only "pet" I've developed for my Predator characters. It is an important (and silly) character in my fan fiction, but I don't have very many pictures of it yet.

Pfaukals have many of the habits of a cat, but they're clever and snippy like a parrot. They are not above playing pranks (like hiding a critical piece of armor) to get their way. Some of them are a little bit telepathic, but they think in pictures rather than words. They like to mimic sounds that they hear, and that is how Yikyik got its name - from Baku snapping his fingers. Pfaukals are hermaphrodites - they are both male and female at the same time, and a single pfaukal can reproduce without any help. The baby pfaukal inherits its parent's memories, and pfaukals can remember a very, very long way back.

Pfaukals are technically insectivores. They have a very long, sticky tongue and like all kinds of bugs. They also eat some meats and fruits. Their spit is very thick and gooey, and they can coat their body with it as an acid-repellent "rubber suit".

They see fairly well with four beady little eyes. They hear fairly well, though their ears are more like those of a bird, with no external ear-flap. They can sense some forms of non-visible electromagnetic energy, such as the EM waves emitted by Aliens. This only works at close range, like if the Alien is right around the corner.

Um... what else...? They have non-retractile claws like a dog. They have short, stubby mandibles with a lot of flesh webbing between them; the mouth opens up like a flower with the long tongue in the middle. They *like* being around people, but they want to be the only pfaukal in the house or on the ship. A Predator would not keep more than one pfaukal at a time unless it was a parent and offspring.

Yikyik likes to listen when people read out loud, and it also likes to bob along with the music (I have seen cats and birds do this; it's very amusing).

There! That is a lot of fan-blather. Let me know if you have any questions.

As I suspected, it is a good ability thought.

Aww... Great description, I like this critter more and more. And now I understand why there is one sitting listening to the band. (I've seen rare cases where dogs do it too, often more beating their tails with the rhythm.)

And I have one more question.
So this is the same Sari in this picture, that's in this one with Baku? [link]

rachaelm5 In reply to XenoPredDragon [2011-11-15 02:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's Yikyik with Baku in the picture link. It's an older drawing. I've updated Yik's design just a little bit.

oh wow, Im loving this! I too was thinking of making some sort of picture showing off one of the celebrations Kyras clan would have. Most likely the annual celebration every year they would have, celebrating the three yautja who brought the clan together. Id love to see this piece colored too. If I may, any chance I can try my hand at coloring this as well? (on my laptop of course, just need info on colors lol.) Im sure once you color this, it will be amazing as usual hehe.
