Description
MOOOOOARRRR COWBELL!This is it. My Predator magnum opus is finally complete, and I can go on with my life.
This is my half of a trade with . She just wanted a couple of our characters interacting in some interesting way, but as usual I decided to turn the project into a tour de force. I wanted to challenge myself, you see. Sporkey has been very, VERY patient with me throughout this months-long process.
Accomplished with ink (about eight hours), watercolor (twenty seconds, and not visible because it's under the colored pencil), and Prismacolor pencils (sixty or seventy hours- seriously). Format is larger than usual at 12 x 18 inches, but there was no way I would be able to cram all of these guys into a 9x12 and still get in all that detail.
-----------------------------------------------
Wanna know who's making all that noise...? I mean besides the guys on percussion instruments. They get going and they just kind of take over for a while. Once they tire themselves out, the rest of the musicians can chime back in.
Foreground left with the long, thin Flute-o-Phone with teeth is my character Chaunn'tne-di.
Behind Chaunn on the mandolin is her dad, Khan'nai (with especial thanks (again) to *Fiji-Fujii for Khan's new design).
Behind those two on the left, playing the sticks and the two long horns are just some random guys.
Center foreground on the harp is ~SporkeyAnonymous 's character Sar'idikk.
Directly behind Sari on the double-drum is her big, tough buddy Kiit'du.
On the tambourine is my scholarly character Bak'udrin-de.
With the maracas is an old friend, Yen-ta.
Behind Baku, seated with the cowbell is another random guy. Honestly, I needed more cowbell.
On the right with the wrap-around horn is ~peanutchan 's matriarch, Tituga. I hope P-chan forgives me for not drawing Tituga in a bikini... I enjoy drawing complicated costumes.
The flautist behind Tituga is another random lady.
Oh, and the fuzzball at Sari's feet is a pfaukal called Yikyik. It's the Predator equivalent of a housecat, and Baku the Scholar belongs to it. Naturally.
.................................
...Yes, I did think about the mouthpieces for the various wind-powered instruments. The tissues within the inner jaws of a Predator form a sphincter similar to the way human lips do. With a little bit of adjustment to the mouthpieces, I think a Predator could play instruments like flutes, trumpets, and tubas. Reed instruments like clarinets and saxophones would require some considerably different engineering, and I haven't actually featured any of them here. That long, thin thing that Chaunn plays is more like a recorder or Flute-o-Phone with a "trumpet" mouthpiece.

Wow. You've crammed all that detail into 12 X 18"? I love the way you use colour!

Cool! This resembles a painting of jazz musicians. I guess they can do other stuff besides hunting.

The Hunter does not live by blood alone... Β
I have always been fascinated by what alien societies do during their "off screen" time. Β I like the fact that Star Trek and Babylon 5 and other shows got into all of the different peoples' cultural aspects, and it was something I thought about with Predators for a long time. Β The Hunt is all well and good, and of course we have some guys for whom that's all there ever needs to be. Β But what about the rest of 'em? Β What do they do on the weekends? Β What happens when the whole fam-damily gets together for a pit-roast? Β

LOL - Thanks very much. This was something I'd been meaning to do for several years, but had to wait until my skills caught up with my imagination.

Thanks; glad you like it.
I've always been interested in the culture of alien races that we see only glimpses of in the movies. It's been that way with the Predator series for the last twenty years or so.

Thanks very much!
I like exploring alien cultures more than anything else, though I do plan to get back to some pictures with more traditional AvP themes one of these days.

I'm glad you like it! This was certainly one of the most challenging pictures I have done in a very long time.
I spent a week away from my day job and I used that at-home time to finish up this big picture. It was just boom-boom-boom-FINISHED! in a few days.

Whoops, didn't realize I still hadn't replied to this. Sorry for that. Ugh, I'm such a slob...
Anyway, at-home time is always great for finishing up stuff! And this one really came our great! It's a pleasure to look at, even though all the colours are kinda flashy at first sight.

Yes, I'm glad to finally have this bruiser finished. I have a bunch of other work that has piled up while I was fiddling with this goofy thing.

Just simply astonishing! Good method visual method of setting apart the random characters from the main oc's.
The background coloring and decorations reminds me of the predators ship from the second movie.

Thank you!
I was thinking of the second movie when I made the background. I like the glowing bas-relief shapes in the Predator ship and I wanted an abstract design kind of like that for this drawing.

It really was a lot of work - I thought for a while that I'd actually managed to bite off more than I could chew. I took it one character at a time, though; that seems to have saved my sanity. And my drawing arm.

Holy crap. O_O SO MUCH TO LOOK AT!
Great to see Predator fan work featuring stuff other than skulls ;D Just about every Predator fan piece I've seen is them looking mean and holding human (or alien) skulls. Heh. Makes you wonder about what kind of music they'd be playing.

rachaelm5 In reply to BrittaM [2012-03-18 15:47:10 +0000 UTC]
LOL - Oh yes. Eyeball overload. Even from *this* end, I had to take it in small stages, one character at a time.
I do see a lot of Predators looking properly predatory, so I make it a point to take opportunities like this to explore other aspects of their culture. I think that you can't *have* a civilization without music and art!
I get different ideas about the sound of Predator music every time my iPod changes songs... I haven't settled on a sound in my head yet.

BrittaM In reply to rachaelm5 [2012-03-20 01:19:09 +0000 UTC]
Part of me says Predator music would sound like shrieking dissonance or something inherently violent-sounding. Or perhaps a touch tribal-esque.
I agree, I can't imagine a culture without music and art. I think that's what really sets aside "advanced" civilizations from animals--not use of tools, or intelligence, or ability to adapt, but creativity for the sake of creativity. 8D Erh, guess I'm philosophizing now.

Lots of action. Some of the figures "disappear" into the background and are hard to separate out, but I like the composition. This would be one of those fun pieces to get up real close to and examine every square inch of it.

rachaelm5 In reply to Yonaka-Yamako [2012-03-18 15:41:05 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
I wanted the background guys to meld with the setting to some degree - I was trying to fill the space with characters without losing the seven main Predator figures. I do agree that the left side of the picture is more confusing than it should be, and I think that may be due to my Photoshop manipulation; enriching the colors from the initial scan brought the background guys too far forward!
