This is an absolutely incredible piece.. I don't think I can move on from HL3 either, so I can't blame you. It's just such a tantalizing concept, and even though we can be pretty much assured it will happen, we just never know when.
Though, honestly, hands down.. I love your portrayal of Xen the most out of all of the ones i've seen.

HL and addons have some scientists stranded on Xen only in their labcoats, and Barney goes to Xen without a helmet too, so I guess it's breathable.

1st: than nothing it's a joke, take it easy and just enjoy it.
2nd: let me give you the official campaigns with my points (Because I only take oficial sources as true information, sorry):
Half-Life: Gordon have his HEV helmet / You found no scientist alive, just some HEV corpses in your path to the Nihilant (Assuming they are the scientist).
Blue Shift: It's pretty funny, but you are right in this one, actually, I think they dont give a crap about Barney's equipment, just leave it like he have a gas mask or something / Just HEV corpses again (Assuming they are the scientist).
Opposing Force: Adriand Shepard had a gas mask / I find just one, but he die by fall, giving you the Teleport gun and more HEV corpses (Just counting Xen, no the recreations in the laboratories).
Decay: Gina and Colette was using HEV suits / They never go to Xen, but they watch Barney going to, LOL.
3rd: Something I find quite funny it's that Xen have a breathable atmosphere, but out in the void, that means, far away from the floating island (Meaning you will die because you get lost in the void of Xen forever).
No bud, no helmet, no suit, no service! xDDDD

Then again, Xen atmosphere is nothing Valve cares about (like infinite helicopter bombs), so trying to explain it is just a fun brain exercise.
