Description
Soooo... Here's something quick that came to me after one of Dark Heresy sessions.I made it look like old photo to hide the messy sketchy drawing ;]
Imperial Commissar Jastillus Quintus Nihillus and his little daughter, Flavia. Some 30 years before our recent campaign timeline.

Perfect target. Weak, small, not yet grown. Slow refexes. Probably has guards, but those can be dealt with. After what the Imperium did to the Children on Tranch, I have no regrets killing an Inquisitor's spawn.

The vision and thought that went into this piece, superb. Humanizes, brings back down to earth, one of the most rabidly zealous elements of the Imperium.Β
Hmm. The ink of the signature went OVER the bloody thumbprint. A last look at his daughter before expiring from a mortal injury?
Keep up the good work.

Proof that even Commissars have families they care for. Who would have though.Β

Ave Imperator.
This, I believe, is one of your classics. A story of family and of duty, of tragedy and history, drawn in one picture.Β
Keep up the good work.

That reminds me of a shot from Valkyrie.Β Have you seen the movie?Β I'm not accusing you of intellectual property theft btw... I think the film and shots of kids playing war and wearing their parents military gear is something you see across our culture, and it seems to hit a strong mark every time.
Great picture.Β I love it.Β

I like how the hardest and most cruel of Imperial servants have their own soft-spots here and there. Commissar shooting people for insubordination day by day just to come back home and cheer his lil' girl. Makes you really feel how corrupted and bitter this awesome universe is. Thanks a lot! Great Art!

None of the WH40k sourcebooks I read deal with the subject of family in the imperial society... Only noble dynasties get a few mentions here and there...
It'd be a really interesting topic for exploration, considering how totalitarian regimes often put great importance on traditional patriarchal values.

The Black Library has been getting somewhat better at looking beyond the endless battlefields. One of the books recently put out (Titanicus, by Dan Abnett) took place on a Forge World, of all places. Granted, yes, the world is under attack, and as such there's a lot taking place on the battlefield. But there's also dealings between Mechanicus civilians, an Imperial man and his wife and their struggles when she gets sent to the front, and (my personal favourite) a running story following a toy maker manufacturing and selling toy titans during this whole debacle.
Hell, the Mechanicus even tell jokes. I didn't even know they had something like a sense of humour.

It's easy to make violence in warhammer, but to make an image that illustrates humanity? Almost unheard of, you found a way to make me sympathize with a guardsmen-a comissar no less! A man who's job is to execute cowards and turn cloaks. Amazing work once again.

Well, humor me here, as I am still getting the hang of the game.
Calamity Dakkar is the youngest (surviving) child of Commisar Marcialas Dakkar and his Ladywyfe Aufidia. Aufidia died in childbirth after Calamity was born, giving premature birth to twin boys who died shortly after as well. Calamity (whose real name is Martyria) has 2 siblings. An older brother Malachus and an older sister Minerva. The Commisar died in the line of duty (an honorable death that brought thanks to the family) when Calamity was 10. There was only money enough to secure a marriage for one daughter, and that would be Minerva. Malchus was given a commission in the Legion and Martyria was declared and orphan and sent to Schola at Holy Might. Too feisty to be sent to the Administratum stacks and not wanting to become a Bride of the Emperor, as a woman they balked at her application for Cadet status and instead she was admitted into the ranks of the Adeptus Arbites. She was one of the unfortunate Arbites to encounter the Empty Men and is plagued with the nightmares of that xeno/tech-heresy to this day.
Always a faithful woman, the rest of her squads often found her too rigid and demanding for their comfort. It was this discipline that attracted the attention of Inquisitor Mar, (whose Ordos has yet to be discovered) who arranged to have her transported from her assignment into His care. While attached to Mar she has encountered a Black Ship, a Space Hulk, a Grey Knight (shhh we don't talk about them), a lost city of the dead where ancient Space Marines were buried, a woman whose sorcerous skills in omniscience terrified her to no end, she has inadvertently upset the political balance of a feudal planet when one of her team killed the reigning Monarch for heresy, narrowly avoided being captured by Dark Eldar, been told that the Emperor is dying (HERESY!)and they must save him... and is currently wondering why her Inquisitor is tracking down ancient bloodlines of noble houses.
And that brings us to the current scene.

"Remember, always, why we fight. Every day, a thousand worlds burn in the fires of war; some we manage to save, others we are forced to scourge of all life, and a few are forever lost. But for every world upon which we fight, another thousand worlds are at peace. For every man and woman who are mercilessly cut down before their time, a million more die old and content, surrounded by family and friends. For every child sacrificed in unholy rituals or torn apart by ravenous monsters, a million more will be allowed to grow up, to find love and to have children of their own.
That is why we fight."

Of course. We are all servants of the Emperor - anything you can use to serve Him, I shall give freely and gladly.

That speech is very moving and touching. That reminds me of something, Dan Abnett the writter of many W40K in my opinion sum it all in one sentence
"In the grim darkness of the far future there is more than war, there are real people there too."
Somehow those anonymous Imperial Guards are the true heroes of the Imperium.

Relentless Grimdarkness gets grating after a while. A scene of genuine Tenderness every once and a while goes a long way to make Warhammer 40,000 more palitable and engaging.

There's a tenderness to this that is never seen in 40K artwork. Yet it remains grim and foreboding thanks to the bloody thumb print. Good job.

The raw emotion actually made my eyes tear up, as I imagine every "Commissar's Last Word" quote and then apply this image as motivation for their dedication.
I don't know if that says more about the image or me, but utterly splendid in any case.
