Description
Totally scratch built. No pony was sacrificed in the making.Features include:
- 4 1/2 inches on all fours (can stand on hind legs, but better supported by the tail)
- A custom built internal plastic skeleton made from a construction toy called the robot memo clip.
- All joints are true ball and socket joints and can be detached
- 26 Points of Articulation like::
* double ball joints ("barbell" ball joints) on all 4 main leg joints
* 3 points of articulation on the neck alone
* 2 points of articulation on the tail
* EARS are ARTICULATED, with ball joints made from 6mm Japanese pre-biodegradable airsoft BBs (1990s).
- Face is swappable, with 3 faces made, one already with hand painted eyes.
- Upper mane is removable to swap faces and remove lower mane
- Lower mane is made from FLEXIBLE MOLDED SILICONE RUBBER so it will not hinder with posing. (Even for regular custom action figure makers, I've never heard anyone do it. Then again, I've never seen a fully poseable pony either.) Silicone used is 50 year architectural grade, RTV, clear mixed with pink acrylic.
- Body is made from 2 types of 2 part epoxy clay resin (one fast setting but hard, the other slow setting for sculpting), took around 5 packs to finish!
- Cutie marks are hand painted on both sides and are mirror imaged.
Paints used are (actually any paint I still have lying around) Vallejo Model Colors, Tamiya enamels and acrylics, Gunze Sangyo Aqueous colors, and finished with Mr. Color Top Coat Flat Clear.
Total time spent, my free time everyday for over a month! Yes I'm totally out of my mind.

There was a design for Lego ponies before, but I think Lego couldn't get the license cheap enough.
I hope Hasbro could make highly articulated pony action figures someday. But for now, she's the only one.

The paints and tools were free since I used to make models. The materials were a bit costly. It's more than I paid for my leader class Optimus Prime. But if I did it again, it probably won't cost as much.

So what are the chances you'll accept a commission to do something similar?

It's just too time consuming to make one and make it reasonably priced. I'm thinking a simpler figure, with simpler joints and come unpainted so the buyer can make any pony would be the easier way.

Ah. Shame though. Too bad Hasbro won't do something like this.

This is just incredibly impressive!
If Hasbro made action figures of the Mane Six with even half the articulation and poseability, they would make a mint.

I just googled it, there are lots of images. The recent A3 sniper is the most cool looking. I'm thinking of sculpting a suppressor and a bipod like in one pic.

This is the coolest thing I've yet seen today. The only problem I see, and this may only be a problem when viewing the it from a photo instead of IRL, is that the line for her stock smile is not very visible, making it look like she has no mouth or that her mouth is very closed. (is it more obvious that her stock face has a mouth when looking at the figure IRL?)
I like the removable upper manes and flexible lower mane, very clever and practical ideas.
I'm floored by how smooth you were able to get everything sans the lower mane so smooth and were able to make mirror parts for the limbs.
This is very, most definitely Fluttershy. Beyond the sense of the brain going "oh this is a thing meant to look like Fluttershy" as it would with a crude sketch, this feels like the character it is meant to.
What are the body segments between the joints made out of? (Greenstuff? Milliput? something else?) How did you shape the body segments? They look amazing. So smooth and well shaped. (I have trouble getting my milliput to be that smooth when I use it and I have no idea how you were able to get such well shaped parts)
How did you create mirror image parts for all the limb segments?
How did you create alternate faces that all still fit on the same head properly and looked like the same face just with a different expression?
Love removable upper mane and flexible lower mane (both very good ideas)
So all the ball and socket joints came from Robot Memo Clips except the ones for the ears which you custom made?
How did you make the ball and socket joints for the ears?
What did you use as reference while creating this? (screenshots from the show, g-mod 3d models, something else?)
Did you end up having to start over or redo parts at any point?
How did you make the wings?

I've posted the original photos in their normal resolution. I believe Fluttershy smiles meekly that's why it's quite subtle.

Thanks for the keen interest on the different parts of the figure.
(What are the body segments between the joints made out of? (Greenstuff? Milliput? something else?) How did you shape the body segments? They look amazing. So smooth and well shaped. (I have trouble getting my milliput to be that smooth when I use it and I have no idea how you were able to get such well shaped parts))
I used a local version of milliput. I keep a tray of water nearby to keep my hands damp so the clay won't stick while I use my fingers to smooth it out. Polishing was done by 240, 600, then 1000 grit 3M sandpaper. Each coat of paint was also lightly sanded before the next layer was put on.
(How did you create mirror image parts for all the limb segments?)
The limbs aren't exactly mirror imaged when first sculpted, a lot of carving, filing, sanding and comparing each one using a head loupe (to see the smallest differences) was done. Drawing an outline of the part on paper and always checking against it helps too.
(How did you create alternate faces that all still fit on the same head properly and looked like the same face just with a different expression?)
The robot memo clip's clip served as the general template for the head. Like the limbs though, it took a lot of patience fitting it right.
(So all the ball and socket joints came from Robot Memo Clips except the ones for the ears which you custom made?
How did you make the ball and socket joints for the ears?)
Yes, all 8mm ball joints are from the robot memo clip and the 6mm ear joints I made myself (needed to be small to fit the ears). I just drilled the ears carefully until the balls fit then I filled the gap with colored silicone.
(What did you use as reference while creating this? (screenshots from the show, g-mod 3d models, something else?))
I used every reference I could get including buying toys. I draw ponies too so getting an image of what it will look like in my head isn't much of a problem - as well as imparting some of my own style. ^^
(Did you end up having to start over or redo parts at any point?)
LOL, MANY TIMES. For example, I tried molding rubber latex before using silicone for the lower mane. It came out too soft and brittle. That was a waste of several days waiting for it to cure. I do recycle too. The tail was my first attempt at the top mane, I resculpted it to make it look the way it is.
(How did you make the wings?)
The wingtips are made from an epoxy clay that is tougher than milliput but needs to be sculpted in three minutes! I used the curved bottom of a softdrink can to form each teardrop shaped wingtip. Then I glued them together and added the socket before slapping on a slower setting clay then sculpting that.
Hope this answers your questions.

Shares quite a few similarities too since I carved and sanded the parts after sculpting. I tried hiding the joints as best I could without hindering the range of motion.
