Description Darby's been ranting in my brain again, it's the only way to get him to stop.
---

Eric Goldberg is my hero; I adore Phil like it's nobody's business. He's one of my all time favorite characters.
And let's face it, Darby's far from being the most unique character on the block...
But it's a little disconcerting when a fair 20 some people have all independently expressed that Darby reminds them of Phil from Hercules.

I've heard it all at this point. Some people say it's the expressions, the speech, the body shape, the face, the personality, or the whole package. I have gotten the "Phil Response" simply from a doodle of Darb's head floating around my paper.

Now, I get that they're both the short, fat, grumpy guy, but that's an extremely generic character stereotype. There's dozens of others that fit that description. I also understand that I learned a lot about big expressions from watching Eric Goldberg's work, and again Phil is a wonderful example... but you can find those expressions leaked into all of my artwork and characters. Darby's the only one who gets called out for it. How does that figure?

Visually and design speaking I still don't see how people make that connection. Maybe I'm too much of a Phil fangirl (the way fans of a musician claim all the songs are completely different when you think they all sound the same) but I see nothing alike about them.
...Okay, they both have pointy ears, fat bellies, and red noses. You could argue Rudolph fits that description pretty well too. :/

The part I do find amusing is that it's always "OMG Phil!". Not once have I heard "OMG, it's FAT Mushu!"
which is the character I originally feared Darby being connected with before I released him.
But no, nevermind being the same colored-schemed dragons; minds leap over Disney's mythical-species rainbow to connect Darby with Phil instead.

*facepalm*

I....never thought that Darby looked like Phil. Then again, I never got real into the Hercules movie either. Honestly, Darby reminds me of someone but I'm not sure who or what. And its only in snatches that he reminds me, so it's probably more one of those things where he reminds me of a stereotype every so often or something.

Well, regardless of what he reminds me of (or not) I still really like his character!

Since you asked...

You look like Phil.

I think One Last Dream has only reinforced that there's not a whole lot Darby can threaten physically. He's much more of a guerrilla warfare kind of grotesque.

...unless he drowns you in a puddle.

Unfortunately for him, yes. Very much so.

And assuming he can get his opponent to let down their guard. I shudder to think of what would happen if he went against Grin.

Are you sure you want to know what a masochist/sadist with tentacles would do?

Well... that sounds like a fairly predictable ending. :<
I wondered it if might turn out slightly different if Darby legitimately got Grin to drop his guard, but it's the same pissing Grin off.

That probably wouldn't end well since Grin would then really try to kill Darby, broken gem or not.

Uh.. make that 21 people. I'm kinda guilty of being reminded of Phil when I see Darby. I don't know what it is that sparks my mind to make that connection, but then maybe me and the other 20 people are just odd.

It happens so much, it's gotten ridiculous.
I suppose at a certain point, if so many people agree, it may not be possible to argue against it anymore.

However Darby and I will remain slightly miffed.

I think it's the shape and gruff attitude that conjures up the phil image. I see them as two different things but there are similarities I won't deny. And if anything I like darby better as he's cuter and looks easier to pick up X3

Aaron-Smiley In reply to LunaSheWolf [2011-09-28 22:52:59 +0000 UTC]

Probably true. Phil is bigger than Darby. Darb's only about knee-height, like a laaaargely obese house cat. Phil's head hit's Hercules' mid thigh and his horn tips are almost to the waist.

LunaSheWolf In reply to Aaron-Smiley [2011-09-28 23:29:48 +0000 UTC]

Darby wears the weight better than Phil does as well, even if they are proportionally overweight.

and the chubby house cat image...makes me wanna huggle him while trying to fed him fish.

Darby's pretty bottom heavy, haha.

Would you settle for goldfish crackers? I'm not sure you'd have much luck with real fish.

Really? I'm surprised people think this.
That thought didn't even cross my mind at all.
I think darby is pretty unique overall.

He doesn't make me think of Mushu though because he doesn't have a mustache, lol.

I'm glad someone doesn't see it! Strangely we're on the less populated side of this debate.

But he doesn't have a Phil beard either!! GAHhhh....
