Nice is this by any chance based off the mimics that attack you on Terraria?

I guess, but Mimics in a monster sense are pretty common, especially the treasure chest kind

Mimics in a monster sense could mean giant insects that live in the sewer and mimic their prey

I dunno. You maybe right. Some might argue differently tho.
But basically a true mimic can pretty much imitate anyone or anything.
One great example of that is from the sci-fi horror movie that I watched when I was a kid that has since become a cult classic. John Carpenter's "The Thing". It was based off the novella "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr.
"The Thing" is about this shape-shifting Alien creature that can become anyone it wants to be. It digests/absorbs it's prey and then shapes itself to imitate them.
In my opinion John Carpenter's "The Thing" is better than Ridley Scott's "Alien".
Don't get me wrong, the xenomorph in Ridley Scott's "Alien" is pretty badass but the alien creature in "The Thing" is just on a whole new level of badassness.
Just imagine both aliens in a fight. That would be frikkin awesome. Hmmmm... I wonder... What if 'The Thing' alien can actually digest and absorb the xenomorph?
