I have a friend who makes eye textures for 3D models, and all she does is take images from google, crop the eye out, and edit it so it fits the texture, then claims it's hers

TOO MANY PEOPLE USE GOOGLE FOR IMAGES! Google is the SOURCE of most art theft and improper usage of art.
I blame Google for art theft too much but in my opinion, it is one of the main sources.

YES! I hate artist's comments like "credits: picture by google"
Google is neither a resource nor an indication of source -.-

Well they are one there to share the picture's and it's not even their picture's anyway they get it from other site's. As long as they are not posted here it should be fine.

Um, no. Google uses something called a spider and harvests images from websites. They are not there with the owner's permission to share it for other use. So using those images for anything without contacting the real owner for permission is copyright infringement. That's why Google puts that warning on there that the images "may be protected by copyright". They really need to change that to "ARE protected by copyright", because 99.99% of the time it IS copyrighted.
The problem here on DA is tons of people will say "I got this element from Google" as credit. That's not credit. Google doesn't own the images and Google is not a stock site giving permission for the use of those images. So using anything from Google is theft unless you track down the real owner and ask permisison. Thus, it ISN'T "fine". In fact, it's pretty disrespectful to the real owners of the images.
