The collapse of the previous, more advanced global birrin civilization.

I think if you want to suggest exploration, with the astronaut leaving the ship, the Birrin should be facing away or outward from the ship and a more strong visual connection with the ship itself such as foot prints. Upon first look I immediately thought this a Birrin encountering a non-Birrin spacecraft. There is not enough detail on the Birrin's clothing to suggest a spacesuit. Only after reading the description did I notice the crane and harness system sticking out the glowing portal. I think you were to subtle here.Β
As famously observed of sequential-art/comics that it's the spaces between the panels, where the readers imagination fills in the gaps, where the real story is told, in static/single-panel art, it's the suggested action before and after the depicted imagine where the the real story of work takes place.Β
In this case, the Birrin moving Β towards the spacecraft, combined with no tracks or signs of means of egress suggest a before story of the Birrin seeing the craft land and coming up to investigate. Also, the apparent camera cluster on the under hull of the spacecraft makes a pronounced visual line with Birrin suggesting the craft is watching the Birrin as it walks up.
All this adds up to a before story of a Birrin seeing a spacecraft land walking up to investigate and an after story of Birrin to non-Birrin interaction of some kind. It might be beating the more astute over the head with the story but leaving the harness system dangling down on the surface would make its part in the story more clear. (Besides, real astronauts would likely be concerned with having the system ground level in case of the need for sudden ingress.) Followed by footprints leading from the harness to the outward facing Birrin astronaut.Β
As an afterthought, a painting of a cordon of Birrin military units and scientist-with-gear Β surrounding an obviously human lander as in a reversal of the 1950s flying-saucer flick trope, would be rather humorous even if not spectacularly original. Although, come think of it, never seen such such a work.Β

I love how out of place the spaceship and explorer look in the clean landscape. This is a wonderful whimsical piece

Very imaginative and in my opinion, a unique depiction of a believable alien world and it's inhabitants. Brilliant concept.

A birrin version of Neil Armstrong's famous, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," quote? I have to admit, the saucer's a lot sleeker than Apollo 11's Lunar Module Eagle. I suppose it has to be, because it operates in an atmosphere, unlike the LM or Surveyor unmanned landers; no need to worry about streamlining in vacuum!
A beautiful picture, like the rest of your work.

What if the birrins' home system has another planet with sentient life on it as well? I just love that kind of idea. It would also make it easier on the birrin when meeting humans; they would already know that there are "aliens" out there.

I've never really taken the time to comment before, despite quite thoroughly browsing your work, but I love your non-humanoid take on alien life.Β It's such a shame that humanoid, bipedal lifeforms are the easiest to budget for in modern scifi, if only because it's actually only one of a myriad of shapes intelligent life could possibly take.

Β Pure awesome sauce! Something I am very curious about is how would first contact with humans go (assuming they are within a reasonable distance), to simplify it further, what if I was exploring the planet at the same time and happened upon and approached this lone dude just outside his ship?
