Description
A Headshot of a large predator from the Birrin world.Upper eyestalks contain eyes and ears, lower contain eyes and sensory tentacles.
Most creatures related to the Birrin have 4 'lips' covering their jaws. However in this case the upper lip has evolved into a head shield which helps the creature push through dense forest. The blue membrane is used for display and can be retracted under a shield when not in use.
The animal hunts like a large heron, snatching smaller prey by shooting forward its long neck. It swallows most food whole, or by tearing it apart with its smaller inner jaws and toothed tongues.

Is a fully-grown individual of this species similar to an average sized Birrin?

Can I just say that your artwork is amazing?! It reminds me so much of Wayne Barlowes artwork in his book Expedition. Are you intending to make this world of yours into a book similar to that? I would love to buy it and read it if so.Β

Totally reminds me of the Goa'uld on Stargate SG-1 - little snake like things that moved very fast and had mouths that opened by spreading in all directions. Creepy and dangerous... both the Goa'uld and your design.Β I like theΒ colours you used and how the open mouth kind of looks like a plant one way but the mandibles of a beetle the other way. Β ... Definitely still looks like a penis though π, sorry π .

Actually it is related to the birrin, so behind the neck is a multi legged body

at first glance (without paying much attention) it looked like a weird alien penis, so i looked closer and wow, it looks like it could be (could this be a back story??? please?) something out of an anime, some kind of creature on... some kind of "thingy" that came from outer space to planet earth, oooh, and would its colour change when in contact with different materials, kinda like a chameleon and it can hypnotise people and talk through their bodies and they are running away from another extraterrestrial being.
(Australian spelling)

It is part of the birrin universe, and when I update it I will definitely de-penis it a bit

This is actually really beautiful. I especially like the coloration. I like how it does not look like any terrestrial creature, but still looks like something that could actually exist.

Tried to bring together principles other animals use, rather than just copying any one creature.

Reminds me of the designs in Avatar. Really inspiring, I find it hard to "think through" something before representing like you seem to have done here, it seems like you thought through every aspect of the creature resulting in a very interesting and most importantly believable design. Bravo!

are there eyes near the base of the lower tentacles? also, are the eyestalks retractable or do they stay like this all the time?
π: 0 β©: 1
Abiogenisis In reply to PeteriDish [2013-01-20 12:17:44 +0000 UTC]
There are eyes at the ends of both eyestalks, and yep they are retractable, usually retracted when afraid or tackling prey.
π: 0 β©: 1
PeteriDish In reply to Abiogenisis [2013-01-20 12:21:45 +0000 UTC]
so the circular shape near of the lower eyestalk isn't an eye? so it is the sheath to which it retracts? and I have noticed that some of the animals only have one thick eyestalk on the top and not two (for example the xenoraptor?), and I have seen the same on the older birrin sketches. is it just how time went and you gradually changed the basic anatomy a bit?
π: 0 β©: 1
Abiogenisis In reply to PeteriDish [2013-01-22 12:34:54 +0000 UTC]
Yep, the circle is part of the eyestalks' protection.
And yes, those changes you have noticed over time are just part of the development progress. Now they all have two on top, two on bottom.
