Description
One Ring to rule them all,One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.
It's done!
I had so much fun drawing this one! I watched the Hobbit in December, and I just knew I had to draw something for it!
It's definitely one of, if not the most, time-consuming drawings I've ever done.
The size is A2. that is 420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4 in)
LOTR is pretty much the most amazing film ever made, and the Hobbit was right up there.
Now for some thoughts from me about this image.
The idea was to show how the ring brings all these people together in it's evil way. I could have used Frodo instead of Bilbo, but i just loved Martin Freeman so much that i had to use him. At least it is a hobbit.
Mars Lumograph graphite pencils and Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencils.
I hope you guys like it!
One pencil was killed in the making of this drawing, and one badly injured.

Thank you so very much for writing this!
You know, I never got around to reading it I was always a slow reader as a kid, and when I tried to read it(in Norwegian) I just couldnt get past the beginning. But I will try again now, and in English this time!

You will love it I read it in Bulgarian, my mother language, and I really loved it
A few years ago I tried to read LOTR in English but it was a disaster
I cannot read Tolkien in English and I do not want to try. I am currently reading LOTR in Bulgarian and I love it!

I'm not to fond of reading Norwegian, I feel the language lacks something. So I'll have to read it in English Plus, the names are not all the same in Norwegian, which is so annoying

Time consuming drawing? Totally worth however many hours you put into it. Seriously, this is amazing- every single minute you put into this was worth it. The ring is especially well-done. Everything looks like something that could have been made for the actual movie, down to the level of nigh-photographic detail in the images and the Elvish on the ring. Simply beautiful work!
That said, you wanted constructive criticism, and that's what I'm here for. There are two things that give me pause: The white edging and the lighting. These both deserve separate paragraphs, so here goes.
The first things that made me want to look again were the white lines that divide the image into three. As I looked closer, I saw that there was indeed a parchment edge in the white. My main issue is that it looks, well...drawn as opposed to the three pictures being torn out of book pages. It feels like they need just a tiny bit more depth to work- a shadow beneath the edge.
The other thing that struck me was the lighting. The lighting was done best on Bilbo, whose face is seemingly illuminated by the ring in the center. Perhaps a few more touches of white on Gollum and Gandalf would have made them pop- as if Gollum's eyes don't pop enough already. The dark background also makes Bilbo's face stand out more than the rest of him. It's hard to pinpoint what made Bilbo really pop out of the shadows, illuminated only by the One Ring, and the other two not so much. Work with it in something like Photoshop; I'd hate to wreck this with bad advice.
Don't get me wrong, though. This is still an excellent piece. It would make a stunning "collector's edition" cover after all three Hobbit movies are released on DVD. I'd buy it for the cover alone.

Thank you so very much!
I totally agree with you about the edges and the light. I was mostly looking for references with a high quality, and that was hard enough But I also think Gandalf and Gollum should have gotten some more light. I've gotten some feedback on stuff I could improve, so I might just go back and see if i can make it better. I don't usually do it, but this one sort of deserves it.
thank you so very much for taking the time to write this!

Aww, thank you for the lovely response!
Again, I'd go into GIMP or PhotoShop to test things on a work like this. Y'know, just to make sure it looks right. It's too awesome to wreck with one bad smudge.

I'll leave it for a little while though, work on some other drawings. Sometimes it's better to do it with a fresh perspective! I'll definitely photoshop it first

I must say, for having drawn only a year you're pretty good You should see some of my earlier works from 2007
Yes, I did draw the ring, saved it for last so I wouldn't get graphite all over it
I'm really happy you like it, thank you so very much for writing this!

I've been watching your work for quite a long time, and I have to say that this is BY FAR one of the most detailed works I've ever seen come out of such a talented artist. The detailed work on the shading clearly shows through, the lighting and color of the ring was also spectacular. If I could give any advice, i'd have to suggest choosing a lighting focal point for all of the characters, and not having it come from random points. Maybe have the light emitting from the ring itself? The originality would have to be cut because of it being someone else's series, but this truly is a worthy piece of fan-art for such a fantastic series. Keep up the great work, because I can't WAIT to see more! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h⦠" width="15" height="13" alt="

Thank you so very much!
It would have been brilliant if the light had come from the ring or something! Sadly my talent lies in realism from photos, not anatomy knowledge. I would not have known how to change the light and kept the realism. But I could not have agreed more; it would have looks so much better!
Once again; thank you so very much!

Wow!!!! I have never seen any of the movies but this drawing caught my attention. The detail is amazing. The ability of the ring in the middle to capture your attention yet amazingly does not take away from the rest of the drawing is superb. The originality and thought is also what makes this drawing beautiful. The detail in the beard is really awesome. It's hard to find anything to critique in this drawing. If I had to find something it would be that the darks being darker might make it pop even more. That though is not a reflection of you but with the nature of graphite. You have done an amazing job and I am excited to see what you come up with next!!!!

This. is. incredible. You put so much time and so much deal into this; it is extremely beautiful. What medium did you use, you used it very well. How long did it take you to create this? I love all the texture in the individual faces, the hair, the folds in cloth, and the eyes. the values are phenomenal, from your darkest shadows to your whitest highlights. To have the ring in colour in the middle made it really bring this to life more, and at the same time it doesn't draw the attention entirely away from everything else because everything in this composition is modeled beautifully. And you got the faces dead on! I have never really watched the LOTR movies or the new one that just came out, but this kind of persuaded me to go see it. Overall you did amazing! Keep up the excellent work!

You know, I never know how long a piece takes me, I cant keep track. But I used about two weeks from start to finish. I did not draw all of those days though.
You really should watch them, they are simply amazing!
Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to write this, it means a lot!

This is so awesome! The shading and detail and expressions (especially Gollum's) is AWESOME! I love how you made the ring in color, it makes it so much more artistic and it stands out a whole lot more. Beautiful piece, beautiful shading, amazing artist. I also like your note at the end of the description "One pencil was killed in the making of this drawing, and one badly injured.". It's super funny
Bravo!
