Surprise! I redid the EOTS cover for the third time because why not! The last cover was outdated anyway, as I’ve changed the designs for literally every character on it one way or another. You can find the previous cover here , but it’s probably right next to this one in the folder for Eye of the Storm.

As you can see, I’m continuing the trend of making art in just Clip Studio Paint! Unlike my previous submission (“Black Sheep”), I even did the sketch for this drawing in Clip Studio! You can find the sketch in my sta.sh here . I started working on this a few days ago, and I finally finished it just a few hours ago! My mom was really impressed by it, so after showing it to her I figured I should go ahead and upload it here! I expect that I will be slowly remaking the original pages of EOTS so that they better fit my updated storyline and character designs, but since I’m working on them in Clip Studio I figured why not make a new cover while I was at it? And here’s the final result! I’m pretty happy with this.

I’m very pleased with how the cat skull in the clouds turned out—it was a visual that I’ve had in my mind for a while now that I wanted to have in the actual story, but I wasn’t sure how to go about drawing it until now! I looked at a lot of cloud Mufasa fan art as reference when drawing it 😂.

I also had a lot of trouble in the beginning with how to approach the coastal rocks in the background, but after spending an embarrassingly long time looking around the asset store for Clip Studio (which, by the way, has made it SO much easier to find new brushes and materials than it was for Procreate) I eventually stumbled upon a handy rock pattern brush. I would be lying if I said I painted the rocks myself, though my hope is that by having this rock brush in my arsenal, I’ll be able to improve my actual rock painting skills by seeing how the rock brush works in comparison. Since they weren’t the focus of the drawing, I decided it would save me a ton of time to just use the rock brush. I did, however, manually shade them (which is the bare minimum I guess lmao), but unfortunately I didn’t realize that most of my shading work would be covered up by Skittles, who I had hidden while I was shading the rocks. On the bright side, using this rock brush has given me new experience with figuring out how lighting works with the many angles and edges of rocks!

I had a lot of fun doing the lineart for Skittles here, and since it’s the cover page I was able to be way more detailed in how I drew her. I don’t often draw Skittles with this kind of expression, so it was really fun and refreshing for me to show a different side of her! Contrasting with the previous cover, I tried to give Skittles a more worried and uncertain expression, as opposed to the previous cover where I tried to give her a more determined look. As evidenced by the lack of her collar and the addition of the feather, this is obviously not the same Skittles we see in the prologue. As the author I already know what her character arc will look like, but I’m so excited for all of you to experience her growth as a character as the story progresses!

Still on the subject of Skittles, I had an absolute blast with the lighting in this one! I found some softer brushes that I used for the shading, and I figured out how to use the smudge tool (or “finger tip” as the tool has been titled) to mess around with the lighting to give the appearance of fur! There are still some Procreate features that I prefer over Clip Studio, such as being able to turn any normal brush into both an eraser and a smudge/blending tool (if they added that feature to Clip Studio I would be so happy). I had a lot of fun with the high-detail irises, but I have to admit I did NOT enjoy figuring out the eye placement. I struggled for quite a bit with getting the eyes in just the right position so that Skittles was clearly glancing in the general direction of the Storm clouds without making her cross-eyed. I don’t often draw characters doing that thing you do when you look in the general direction of something without fully turning to look directly at it. Obviously as I make more pages, I’ll be doing that more, but as of right now I don’t have a ton of examples where I’ve drawn characters doing that. Ah, and of course as I’m typing this I notice two areas where I forgot to erase some shading, so now I need to go fix that and change the image file. Nice.

While the updated version loads, I wanted to highlight some other things I enjoyed doing. Finding the right font for the title took me...a long time lol. I finally settled on the “Ringbearer” font, which I found on FontSpace. I downloaded some new fonts to use with the comic, including a new dialogue font (I think it’s called “Manly Men” or something) and the font I used for the rest of the cover, which is fittingly called “Creator Credits BB”. I have to give props to Blambot for offering free fonts on their website! I think the “Manly Men” font will be much easier to look at than “Anime Ace” which is what I’ve been using in the past. Another thing I had fun with was the wind particle visual! I’ve never tried to show wind blowing before, and I’m pretty happy with the results! I think as I try to use it more I’ll get better at it. I would have included more close-up dust/wind particles, but because the background was so dark it was too hard to see any dark, blurred particles towards the bottom of the cover without it looking weird on top of Skittles. I also had fun experimenting with the light, and I’m really happy with the lens flare I added in there! I’ve never been a photography person, so I’m hoping that the lens flare looks believable enough for the purpose of this cover. Finally, I’ve been loving the gradient tool in Clip Studio! I actually used a gradient to build the background off of, and I’m pretty pleased with the results! In my head I considered drawing ocean waves, but I decided against it because I felt that doing that would be too busy and not give people a place to rest their eyes. Finally, I also figured out how to better format the page size and cropping borders, which was something I was struggling with as I was learning how to make custom sized comic canvases.

As always, I hope you all like what I’ve made! I love hearing what you all have to say, so let me know what you think in the comments!! Wherever you are, I hope you have a lovely day/evening/morning!

Thank you!!! Bruh, I have no idea why I wrote a freaking BOOK in my description 💀 I guess I was just really excited to finally finish the new cover?? Who knows lmao. Anyway, thank you for your feedback! I had trouble finding a balance between making the lighting on Skittles dark enough that it was believable but light enough to still see her. It’s funny, because I think I actually did add some faint brightness around her face. I kept trying to make her shading lighter in general, but every time I did it made it look like she wasn’t even in the same scene because the lighting was so wonky. Anywho, I’m super glad that you’re excited for the series!! This afternoon I finished the flat colors for the first page, so once I figure out the shading I’m very excited to post it! Also, thank you for the happy birthday!! Knowing that you remembered makes me very happy! I have you and Sivler’s birthdays in my calendar, but last year the reminder didn’t go off and I didn’t remember to make either of you birthday drawings 🥲. I greatly appreciate the thought, and I totally understand having a swamped schedule (I’m about to have my exams as a freshman in college so I get it 😭)

As always, thank you so much for your amazing and super detailed comment! Until next time!
