Description
Hello all! In between studying for exams and trying to convince myself to write important papers, I’ve been working on more character redesigns for EOTS! Today I finished two redesigns: Lucia and Rosethorn. Obviously, this deviation is Lucia’s redesign. So let’s talk about it!Originally, Lucia and Skittles had basically the same body type. I probably imagined Skittles being a teensy bit taller, but I never made it super clear whenever I drew them together. But no more! This is actually a re-redesign for Lucia. My first redesign for her under the new character template I made for myself looked fine and all, but something was just...off. I’m not sure how to describe it. Something about her body shape and face structure just didn’t feel right. So, in a moment of impulsive decision, I drove to the nearby Barnes and Noble and bought three books: two books about making comics, and one book about how to draw cats and kittens. Using the cat book and Google, I gathered together a new, better idea of what I wanted Lucia to look like.
I made two major changes in Lucia’s redesign. The first being her body type. Lucia now has characteristics commonly associated with British and American shorthairs. She has a shorter, more muscular build (“cobby” as I have read). I gave her the same defining facial floof (scientific term I swear) that’s found in British shorthairs. I made her tail shorter and a bit thicker, and I gave her slightly bigger paws. I also gave her the rounder ears seen on shorthair cats, and I made her eyes rounder in shape. She also has thicker eyebrows than before. She stands at below-average height. Fun fact: American shorthairs are known to be excellent mousers, and were bred in part to serve that purpose!
The second major change to Lucia’s design is her color theme. Her main color is still the same dark gray / black, but I changed her secondary color from a cyan blue to a blueish purple. Her eyes are now purple, and her nose and paw pads are now a pale gray-purple. I did this for a couple of reasons, but the gist of it is that it didn’t make sense for her to have a blue theme because her character will receive a name early in EOTS for a plant that has purple flowers. I also have too many characters with similar blue eyes, so I’ve been trying to diversify that. While less noticeable, I made the light gray areas on her back legs a bit bigger, and I also added a lighter area near her eyes because they were blending in a little too much with her darker coat.
I hope y’all like Lucia’s new design! I’ll be posting Rosethorn’s new design in a bit, but as always I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments!
