Description yeah, I have no idea how to call this
an experiment, no lines, just shading
took me some time to figure out how it should work and I know now that I need to do things differently next time, but it's a moderately pleasing result.

Got to say, that I like your drawing style without lines.

If you want some advise from someone who doesn't have any actual experience drawing, and who doesn't know your own goals for your artistic development, then I guess you could listen toβ€”and by that, I mean to readβ€”me/what-I-type. (Gosh, that was an over-complicated sentence!)

First, I think that your having trouble making the facial expression look like it belongs on that moderately realistically drawn body, as opposed to the vector drawn cartoon style of the show. I know nothing for sure, but I think it might be because horses don't have much facial expression, and that's what these cartoon ponies are based on. So what do you have to go on if you want to study from nature? No living creature I can think of has what you need to study, so you will have to invent your own. Though, I have seen some pieces of fan-art here and there with a convincing smile on a pony which was drawn in a more realistic style. (Sorry for the babbling, it happens when I'm nervous I think.) Anyway, this artist, CigarsCigarettes , has done some neat things with convincingly realistic facial expressions, a favorite of mine is her Rainbow Dash . I think it does well to capture Dash's typical attitude. The smile is not too big for the muzzle, and it pulls the lips around the face in a way that is recognizable asβ€”a ummmβ€”confident smile. Though, I don't think the horses of this world have front teeth that wrap around, and continue in a row toward the back of the mouth. Maybe if real horses smiled more, it could be used to scare away predators though. (Heh, I made a funny. I think…)

Second, I want to remind you of the difference between direct light and ambient light. As I understand it, direct light is that which comes directly from a light source without being filtered through anything and being scattered. (Maybe I should just search for a tutorial that explains it better than me just winging it.) Okay, I'm going to add one more type of light: soft light. Soft light, in my opinion, is somewhere between direct light and ambient light, as soft light comes from a light source and only goes through a filter, frosted glass for example, and then hits whatever it is your looking at. Ambient light is light which has bounces off of the environment before it hits and illuminates what your looking at. Ambient light typically has the potential to get to just about everywhere a little bit. So basically, I'm going on and on about the focus of the light source. Direct light and soft light tend to be closer to each-other in focus, than they are to ambient light. There may be ways to think of light that are more precise and better organized than this, and I'm just using words from some graphic filter effect type thingies in a few programs I've used before, so I suggest you investigate this line of thought more from more trusted sources.

However, there is also the matter of considering what happens to various types of light when they hit various specific types of materials. The I think that generally, more textured a material, the more it will diffuse light. But if the light source is already extremely soft, it shouldn't make much difference what type of material the light is illuminating for you to see. Hair is interesting, because it is made up of many … hairs, which may often be going all in same direction. I think I'd need some fur to play around with in the light to explain more, but patches of fur, all going in one direction in one patch, then all in another direction in a patch next to the other, will have a different effect on light. I imagine you already know about this though.

Finally, I have to ask, what if your opinion of unicorn horns? Are the ones you imagine covered in some form of thin skin from which a short felt grows, or is the hard substance of the horn directly exposed to the air.

I am of the opinion that the hard substance of the horn, whatever that may be, is not covered by anything, considering that I've seen them filed on, in the spa, on the show.

I love getting feedback and yours looks super impressive, so let me address few of the things you said
you're right about the expressions of course, sometimes I can make it look nice, sometimes my fail is total and absolute. in this case it's not the best. and of course I pretty familiar with the works of the artist you mentioned I intend to work some more on the expressions through my ask blog where I draw my OC making all sorts of silly faces

Lightning... yeah... this picture was an experiment and a pretty hard one for me. there are multiple light sources in many colors and I got lost few times along the way. I need to work harder on that part too... on simpler pictures that don't involve laser shows and disco lights still, your input is greatly appreciated and I will read more on the subject next time the same goes for fur, but in this case I'm sometimes going with the "this is just how I do shading" excuse (lame, I know). besides, horse coat consists of really tightly packed short hair, so it acts a little bit differently than for example dog fur... yeah, more investigation needed for future "realistic" ponies

As for unicorn horns... I think that, since horns have almost always the color of the rest of pony's body, they are covered in the same way. the same goes for hooves in most cases.
I think that, if ponies are naturally evolved creatures and not created by some mystical creator forces, than those horns were initially used as a weapon in fighting, or a way to attract females. at that point they were bare bones, like in case of cows, or rhinos. Then after some time, when ponies became more sophisticated and civilized, horns became less of a weapon and more of a decoration, that caused them to be smaller, less sharp and eventually covered with skin (possibly sensitive), while the inside of a horn allowed for some extra nerves to form that allow unicorns for a more direct manipulation of natural magic all ponies have.
or it's covered in some kind of shell made of the stuff hair or nails are made of. my point is, it's not a bare bone and it's a more complicated structure and an integral part of a unicorn's body.
Does that make any sense?

once again, thank you so much for the comment, I will look into those things more next time I'm drawing.

I'm glad you liked my comment.

> Does that make any sense?
Yes, sense has been made!

I asked because I had been thinking about the reflectiveness of the Vinyl's horn, and because the fan-fictions I have read sometimes have differing opinions on that detail of unicorn anatomy, so I was aware of the different opinions out there. My own alternate universe head-canon actually does have a "mystical creator force" at the beginning of the worlds (to explain, there is a group of exactly two worlds which this particular "creator force" was responsible for creating), but which left after seeing to minute details of the both worlds, so that such predictable mechanics and processes, as physics and evolution would carry out it's plan satisfactorily. The as yet unnamed "creator force" which actually consists of two different cooperating beings of relatively massive power and intellect, designed the two worlds with a barrier of sorts, to separate the them initially, yet be overcome when one world had reached a certain point in it's growth, allowing interaction between the two. It was some time after the first breaching of this barrier, that the pony races gained resemblance to what we see in the show, due to a complex and tragic series of events. I wish I could just make myself write the story, but I absolutely cannot organize all the events, and transcribe them into words too! It is profoundly frustrating. I am much too detail oriented, and I have no drive to get things done. But, I digress … a lot. *defeated sigh* So, as it turns out, I prefer my unicorns' horns to be without a covering of skin, but not because of any functional purpose; it's just a whim. I know I'm leaving out a ton of detains, but I'd have to write the longest comment ever to make them make sense, because the explanation would just make you more curious, and I would feel obligated to satisfy that curiosity, and then this would go so far off topic, so as to be almost completely unrelated to what it started as.

Yeah, you do write pretty long comments... and long sentences too.Β

But I know what you mean and I totally understand the problem you have with getting yourself to actually write the thing you have in your head. I have the same problem

And the coloring on that one must had been a nightmare... I mean... so many different colors and angles of lightning!

I really like the back legs, hair and colors. Of course the spine doesn't sink in all that much near the tail. And you forgot a shadow under the glasses. But otherwise it looks nice

and the glasses were a last-minute addition and it didn't occur to me that there should be shadows underneath them. silly me. but I'm glad you like it. I'll try to draw more like this. it's fun, but takes a little bit more time.

I like this a lot It is overall very good, except two things:
I think the...indent on the upper plot is a bit too exagerated.
The way you draw hooves. However, this is a stye thing, and I don't think you are ever gonna change it.
