I love that your technique is loose but accurate. Do you find it hard to go over a painting like this
to make it more refined and tighter? There are times I have more fun and like the results of painting the preliminary underpainting, which has a certain loose and dynamic feel to it. It kills me to have to go over it.

You know, what I struggle with is getting past this point and making it more refined. I guess in a way that's a good thing, but at the same time, I need to push myself because I want to be able to paint a little tighter, just in case I want to sometimes. I've been raised on painting alla prima which 99% of my work is. I think the only oil paintings right now in my gallery that aren't besides the drawings is my last self portrait, [link] which even then was only done in two sittings.

I've done paintings that have taken many sittings, usually a 2 week pose (8 day) and even right now I'm doing something that's taking 4 weeks (total of 14 days, ~35 hours) but I struggle, I mean really struggle to keep that vitality in those pieces. That's why I never post them because I don't think they are on the same level as the alla primas. They usually look overworked because as soon as I go over a piece even the next day, anything I painted over will sink in and lose it's value, color, and luster until I varnish or oil out. My instructor prevents that by working on large paintings section by sections thereby creating a pseudo-alla prima painting where each section is completed during that session and rarely gone over again.

I don't know man, I think a lot of us struggle with the same problem, it's something we have to keep pursuing.
